Instant Bad Oil Leak!

hey guys on my way to work i started smelling a burning smell, and figured it wasn't my Jeep. Kept driving, it kept getting stronger. Now, every once in a while if i go wheeling and don't wash the undercarriage, my passenger brakes will lock up and start burning, so that's what i thought it was. I noticed a little bit of loss of power. Well, i got to work and there was a little bit of smoke coming from the undercarriage, and when i looked underneath the Jeep, there was oil damn near pouring on to the pavement. Probably 3-4 drips per second. Within the 2-3 minutes i was standing there, i had a little pool of oil under my Jeep.

The only thing i can think of is yesterday i started the Jeep and remembered i hadn't checked the oil in a while, so i shut it off, grabbed a towel, popped the hood and checked. It was at the 'Fill' line. I added about 1/2-3/4 of a quart and closed everything up. I drove home from work and even drove it to the store last night, no problems. This started almost instantly on the trip to work this morning. The only thing i can think of is i didn't let the oil settle back into the pan and i accidentally over filled it a little bit...

The oil is coming from the rear of the motor, and it looked like the passenger side. Nothing was coming out of the PCV and i checked to make sure the oil filter was tight. What could I have just blown on my way to work? i wasn't going fast or romping on it at all, just driving through town.....

Thanks guys

try and track down the absolute source of the leak, ie look the motor over thoroughly on the outside. If you see an obvious sign of the leak then you'll know where to start fixing. The burning is somewhat concerning.. did you notice any smoke out your exhaust at all? or was it just smoke under the hood? if its just under the hood i'd check around the valve cover first, see if there are obvious signs (there should be) of leaking.

the smoke is dripping off the rear part of the motor, and actually off of the transmission front cover, then dripping on to my exhaust, that's were the smoke is coming from...sorry forgot to mention that. Think it could be rear main seal?? I guess the thing i don't understand is how it could just all-of-a-sudden just blow out like that......

Thats up near the valve cover.. if theres too much oil its possible to produce a higher oil pressure and do things it normally wouldnt.. if it were the rear main seal it wouldn't be dripping onto the exhaust. Take a look at it when you get a chance, check the oil level too.. you'll probably be able to trace the exact spot the oil was coming out. If its just the valve cover gasket thats a pretty cheap and simple fix

mine leaves about hand size puddle every night and is leaking on the exhaust from where it crosses under the motor/trans and mine is the rear main so his could be also. i'm doing mine tomorrow. will get good pictures

Did you check the oil pressure sending unit on the right side of the block towards the rear. If that breaks it's an instant flood. Disconnect the wire, change out the unit. Easy fix. Good luck

i didn't look there, i will in a little bit. My oil pressure gauge has always been pegged at 80 or whatever the highest is, not because that's my pressure, but because it's just pegged. I'll give it a look, that may be it. I checked my oil after i shut it off at work, and i had plenty of oil, right down the middle of the "fill-full" lines............

If there ain't no oil under it, there ain't no oil in it!

how is that up near the valve cover.....?

It's dripping on the exhaust where it curves from the drivers to passenger side under the jeep.

ahh good point.. its 8:23am, i havent slept all night and for whatever reason i was forgetting the exhaust crossed over there.. for some reason i was imagining it dripping off the side down under where a tj would cross over.. my bad, yes its even more likely to be a rear main seal..

My train of thought was, if it was dripping onto the exhaust from anywhere it would have to be setup like a TJ and have the exhaust crossing in front of the oil sump in the pan, and be coming from the valve cover.. totally spacing that the exhaust crosses underneath the transmission.. when my rms was leaking it was never enough for the drip to move that far back. i have a real jeep errr yj too

im starting to think that it actually might be the oil pressure sending unit, since it happened so fast and i have a pegged oil pressure gauge. I'll go investigate it at lunch...

well your oil pressure sending unit is obviously borked, that will need replaced, its cheap.. but.. rms leaking like that is probably due for said rms to be replaced too..

I had same issue and mine was rear main seal. Changed it twice because I nicked first one without knowing so be careful. On an 89, it's a two piece rest main that accessible thru oil pan. I changed mine in driveway last night so haven't ran it yet.

Mine has bad rings and blows out the dip stick and drips on the Exhaust pipe if I run it hard.

MAJOR OIL Leak or just leaks

After a ton of repaires for oil leaks. rear and main seal. PVC and gromet.

My 2.5. 4 banger had a freaking incorrect dip stick!!! It had a 6 cyc dip stick....I had 5 people look at it ..after looking at the part number on the dip stick and going online that was the issue. The clue was the oil change!

duh !

turns out the oil flooding was, in fact, the oil pressure sending unit. I had changed it before, but blew up the original motor and swapped in a donor block and head..........totally spaced that the new sending unit i put on stayed with the old block. Pulled off this sending unit and replaced it with a new one. when i looked at the old one, holy crap was it shot. looked like it got ran over and sat in an oven for a few days. The oil flooding stopped completely.....and my oil pressure gauge works!!! woot woot!! I've gotten a few drips after the jeep has sat in a parking space for a couple of hours, but it may be oil leftover from the bad leak. I'll power spray it later and get it all cleaned up to make sure.

Last thing, is there some type of sending unit for the temp gauge? the gauge is dead, it doesn't do anything but light up. I can't find any loose wires or grounds that would make it unserviceable, is there something specific i should look for or do?

thanks guys

Well, I think it's an '87. I got it from a guy who was either the 2nd or 3rd owner of the motor. It's solid and has served me well since I've owned it. Lots of power, very reliable. Funny thing is I have no clue as to how many miles are on it....for all I know, there could be 500,000 lol

The temp sending gauge is located on head on the drivers side near the firewall.. its a 1 wire plug with sensor.. check to make sure its plugged in
