Jeep wont start,help!

So the other day off-road we stopped to take a breather, when I went back to start my jeep nothing happened, so I went ubderneath to tap the starter while somebody turned the key and it fired up.

Well not too long ago I went to the driveway and it would not start, so I tapped the starter while somebody turned the key and still nothing.

So I pushed it to the streets, I live on a hill, hoping to roll start it but still nothing. What could this be? I mean if the starter is bad shouldnt it still start from a roll and popping clutch? any info is helpful, im trying to off-road right now but obvisouly not going anywhere till I get this fixed, thanks.

If it cranks when you tap it, its time for a rebuilt starter. As for not cranking from a roll, could have been alot of things but easier to diagnose when you can spin the engine over without having to push it back up hill everytime

Did you check the battery connections, cable connections and find out what your reserve is in the battery? Not starting once and banging on it does not mean the starter is gone, just may have overheated due to slow off road speed, or you have have dented it and don't know it. It is not shielded well.

What do you mean by "Nothing happened"? What happens when you turn the key?

IE:
'All the lights and buzzers come on but no crank' (this would likely be starter)
or
'Nothing at all, No Lights no Crank' (this would likely be battery related)

Or......Any other of a hundred things........But exact symptoms help diagnosis.

Good luck!

ok, really quick. the same thing happened to me, but luckily i was next to another jeep, and they said that if you turn the ignition 3 times, then on the 4th you give it some gas, then it should work. and it did. i don't know if it'll work for you but i guess you could give it a shot. hope that helps. good luck.
