jeep wrangler 4 cylinder gas mileage

I want to buy my son a Jeep wrangler. Its conditioned on him getting and keeping a 3.5 average in High school which will save me money in the long run if he gets into a public college.

I want to find out which jeep wrangler has the best gas mileage and need some help.

I checked the mileage chart and the 2006 4 cylinder is listed at only 16 city and 20 highway with the 6 speed. I thought the last 4 cylinder might provide the best mileage. However, the 2009 with the 6 cylinder is listed with the same mileage. Is this right or wrong?

If they have the same mileage, I should consider paying a bit more and getting the 2009 that comes with a forever drive train warranty. I'll keep it forever!

(I know you don't buy a jeep for gas mileage so save the harassing comments please; I just can't take it)

no sense in doing the 4 cyl. under powered, and the new ones have the crappy mini van and neon motor. the 6 cyl does get about the same mileage, jeeps do not get good mpg

Yeah not worth it to get the 4 cylinder. Maybe a couple mpg's better but not nearly as much power.

OK well I'm glad I asked. Now what about the mileage difference between the auto 6 cylinder tj and the standard 6 cylinder ty?

Also, which years were the best 6 cylinders?

And I presume nobody likes the new v-6 but what about the forever warranty???????? Shouldn't I be at least tempted?

the warranty is a joke, powertrain warranty and they'll come up with loopholes i'm sure. maintenance records and crap. if a rod goes through the block it will be covered, big deal, obviously they calculate the averages and determine whatever they do they won't lose, just like any warranty or warranty company. they're there to make money, that wouldn't be a big point to me. the best 6 cyl is the 4.0

Is the last year of the 4.0, 2006, the best year?

I also agree about warranties, but I would love to buy it and then harass them for as long the warranty lasts, which is forever or at least until I die, which ever occurs first.

Wrangler's dont get good gas mileage. They are tall, un-aerodynamic, and built for off road capability. The four cylinder trucks have 4.10 ratio's, at least the YJ'
s which is not ideal for fuel economy. I think that the new Prius would be a much better choice for gas mileage. I said for gas mileage, but don't do that to sonny boy we don't want him to be a 40 year old virgin. Get him a Jeep and a BP gas card.

Hows the resale value of stick versus automatic?

And I'm still temped to buy a new one with the crappy v6 and the forever warranty and keep it forever! If they stay in business forever.

Define good. ) Seriously though: where 34 MPG is good for one vehicle, 12 MPG can be great for another so good is relative.

As long as you Jeep remains "Stock" it can get up to 20 MPG, but the majority of Jeep owners customize theirs for offroading. I have 3 Jeeps and they get from 12 to 18 MPG depending on the modifications

I had the same deal with my dad. Got the 3.5 and I've had my yj for about 4 weeks! Mines not too bad on gas

Free Gas

I get free gas in 2 of my 3 vehicles and will be getting free gas in that one in about 10 months.

It all depends on how you drive. Our Impala SS gets 20+mpg when my wife drives and only 18mpg when I do.

I personally would stick with a manual for a Jeep since Chrysler can't make a tranny to save its life. A forever warranty, it's gotta have so many loop holes that it won't hold water.

Always go for the manual. ESPECIALLY if you get a 4 cylinder. Its more fun to drive, gives your jeep just a little more balls, and if you drive right, you can get a little better mpg's. I also think you have better control in snow and mud.

I have a 93 YJ with manual and the 2.5l Fuel injected engine that is completely stock. I consistently get 17MPG. The 4 cyl. is a dog and the manual is fun to drive. I get 15MPG if I take it off road and play. As others have said it is a brick on wheels. I cant speak for the newer Jeeps as I have no experience with them.

I can go a lil over a hundred miles on half a tank that's with the four banger. I think they are great yeah not powerhouses but the six isn't either. I sold my 4.0 to get this stock 2.5.

my wife gets 38mpgs in her jeep ----oh wait a minute thats in her patriot....

i was getting close to 20 in my 92 yj with stock 2.5 and stock wheels,---but i dont know yet what i will be getting once i get it rolling again---doing a 4 inch lift with 33 inch tires----let you know soon i hope..

Thread back from the dead but this post intrigued me.

Why go down?! Do you regret it?

I am from New Zealand and a 4.0 to me is just a huge engine, hence I am leaning towards the 2.5.... but everybody says that's a bad move.

Never heard of anyone wanting to go from the 4.0 to a 2.5. The 2.5 is a good little workhorse, but it can't come close to the 4.0. With the 4.0 you get more power with about the same mpg's and both motors will last a long time, but the 4.0 standard transmission will outlast the 2.5 by many miles.

2.5 with 33's n I get around 12 miles a gallon, generally as a daily driver it only goes about 16 miles a day so gas ain't bad. Gas in my area right now is about 2.05 a gallon which makes a huge difference

I have a stock 2.5 95yj with 31's on it and I am getting 18.39 MPG with hardtop and full doors

94 2.5l on 33x12.50x15s with 4.88 gears getting between 15-16 mpg average, for the last few tanks right about 15.5 even. mostly state highway driving 45-55mph though

Wow, Zombie Thread!

This one really does take us all in a trip in the WayBack Machine!

I find it incredible that I have Wranglers with the two most despised engines ever, the Mighty 2.5 and the "minvan 3.8". yet, they have both served me well. The best part is the JK gives me 19-20 mpg over the same route that the 2.5 delivers 17-18 on.

Just to have fun on the JK forums, I like to point out that their beloved 3.6 was first available in the Chrysler T&C and Dodge Caravan well before their Wrangler got it (1-1/2 mode years!).

In flatter terrain I have gotten as much as 21.5 mpg in the JK, but still no better than 18 in the YJ (235/75-15XL, 4.10:1, 5spd). I must say that I really love the 6spd in the JK though.

A rather big assumption. I get 13/14 mpg on the highway. Motor runs great, regeared for new tires. I'm running 35" tires that wiegh 100# a piece, a 5" lift, a 35" tire/highlight jack/shovel hanging off the back, full tool set with replacement parts in trunk, and enough armor to slid over rocks without breaking parts. I'm happy with what I get.
Your statement if directed at those who are stock is correct, but not many of us are stock anymore so your mpg will depend on how far from stock you have gone.
