Jeep YJ Hard Top Question

Hello fellow Jeepers from good old NC. I have a quick question for someone that has a hard top.

I have found a fabricator who has offered to build me a Safari Rack for a hard top to fit my YJ. I was curious as to everyone recommendations to do this. Would it be best to just have one fabricated and just mount it directly to the hardtop, or should I have it mounted to the frame of the Jeep?

My thinking’s are that I want to put the spare on the Safari top to get it out of my backseat (I haven't gotten a rear swing bumper to fit my 33x12.5's). Right now I am thinking about just mounting it directly to the hard top then taking off the spare if I go topless.

Also does anyone know what the width and length are of the top of the factory hard top? I need to get this guy the sizes so he can start fabricating.

Thanks in advance for the help on this!

If he builds you a rack that mounts to the frame you could use it with the top off and you wouldn't destroy you fiberglass hard top with that heavy tire and rack mounted on it.
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
