jeep yj tranny options

I have an 89 yj islander with 4.2 and peugot tranny. The tranny is needing to be replaced. What tranny can I get to replace it that is compatible with what I already have? (ax15?)

I have the ax15 in mine. I am not sure what all you have to replace though. I freekin hate this thing though mine is three month old and it is hard to down shift into second gear. It just seems like the gears do not mesh well at all. I would convert to a nv4500 if were you. It is a far superior design in my opinion. I kick myself every time I think about the fact that I spent $800 getting this thing rebuilt. Instead of upgrading the first time.

nv 4500 is awesome trans, but isn't supposed to fit in yj without severe modification due to size. i believe it is used in dodge 2500 trucks.
i did some research and the newer wrangler trans nv3550 is a little cousin to the 4500, i'm considering this, it takes little modification as it was used in 4.0 motors, and bolting up shouldn't be hard, there is a kit on ebay, a rebuilt trans and t-case with brackets and slave cylinder to do this, i think around 2300 bux.
