Jeep's Broken! Need some HELP please!

On Friday, my Jeep broke down. I am very confused as to what happened to it, and I was wondering if any of you guys have any ideas on what might have happened here. Ok so here’s what happened.

I was driving on Friday morning, started it up, drove down my street, and everything was fine.

As I was pulling out of my development, I noticed a funny smokey burning type smell, but I have am exhaust leak, so I convinced myself that it was just the exhaust. So I continue driving.

I was just driving down the road, straight driving, no stops, for about five miles, when I made a wrong turn into a neighborhood.

I stopped at a stop sign, and noticed that the engine was idling at a very high RPM (around 2000-3000) and thought that was very strange. Then, as I would put it into first and go, the RPM would drop, then shoot back up!

So, at this point I think something is wrong. I drive out of the neighborhood, and stop at the light to get back on the road I was on. Again I notice very high RPM while idling. And again it drops and kicks back up in first gear. And this time I notice SMOKE coming out from under the hood!!

I immediately start back to the house.

So, I am driving as best I can without freaking out. By this time, the smell of the smokey burning smoke is really strong.

I am about 2 ˝ miles from home at a light. I start going, get to fifth gear and start losing power! I down shift to fourth, and keep losing power, plus there is this clinking sound repeating over and over from somewhere.

So by this time I am freaking out! I keep losing power for about ˝ a mile until I lose power completely just as I was pulling off to the side of the road, the Jeep turned off, the power steering locked up,, then it stalled and screeched to a stop. Immediately I think the transmission blew.

I got out and smoke was pouring from under the hood.

I had AAA come pick me up and tow me back to my house 2 miles away. The AAA guy said he could smell either burning oil or burning transmission fluid (the smokey burning smell I smelled earlier).

I get home and my grandfather looks at the Jeep and sees that there is no water in the radiator, it’s completely dry! (don’t know if that had any part in it)

So, I put water in the radiator, and two minutes later, water comes pouring out the bottom of the Jeep! So, obviously I have a large leak…

So, what do you think happened to my Jeep? I am really upset!

I got nothing for you, I'm not a mechanic...but if your radiator was bone dry then its possible that it caused the burning oil. If an engine can't cool down, bad things happen...

What does the oil look like when you check the dipstick? If it looks like a chocolate emilkshake, you probabaly have blown head gasket or cracked block or head.

Bummer...I was hoping it was a 4cyl...then I would say that the good news is that you can now upgrade to a 6...

Definitely check your motor oil for the look of chocolate milk...but even so your engine is probably toast and you will be needing a new/used one.

nope, checked the oil... looks perfectly normal, though a little low, but it looks fine. That was one of the first things I checked

Welcome to the Jeep Reality. If it makes you feel better here is a list of my fixes over the past 5 years...

1. Frame straightening ($1000 as it was bent in 4 diff directions)

2. Replaced half the exhaust, and now the whole exhaust ($1300 total)

3. Blinkers about 4 times including new wiring.

4. Transmission repair ($400)

5. Right Tie rod about 4 times.

6. Repair of center bezel after 3 thefts including replacement of 2 stereos, 1 ipod, a gps, and 3 radar detectors.

Its all part of owning a Jeep. haha

haha! wewll here are mine in the past ummm... 2 months!

1. replaced all brakes (because they locked up while driving)
2. replaced brake lines
(the rest of these fixes are going to happen while we are checking out what is happening with the engine/transmission/radiator)
3. replace gas tank
4. replace radiator
5. replace clutch
6. new rear axle
7. fix whatever is wrong with anything from friday's experience...

it really sucks, but I love my Jeep! But, there goes her paint job, 4" lift, and her 33" tires... at least for a couple more months anyway : (

Oh, well...
and I am going to be doing all these repairs with a really good mechanic friend so that i can learn about fixing her in the future, and plus, I believe in doing it yourself instead of taking it to a shop. That way it's cheaper, and you learn a lot more! I have a sticker on her that's sooo true

Wow thats a rough 2 months. I don't have a buddy that has time to show me the ropes so a lot of my work has been done at a shop. Luckily, a lot of it was done by a family friend's business and he only charged me 30/hr labor.

ya, very rough... PO wasn't very good to it... but I find that if you have someone that is patient enough to show you stuff and let you help as much as you can, then you get to know your Jeep in and out, and you can say "hey I did that!" it feels really good after you accomplish something, you might take twice as long than it would have usually, but it's fun and cheap. And that is pretty good (30/hr) a lot of shops wanted to charge me an arm and a leg for the brakes and brake lines for labor! Thats when I said "thanks but no thanks" and went to my bud!

I honestly haven't changed or fixed anything with my brakes in 5 years of owning my Jeep. I haven't had a single squeal or anything (it only brakes hard from rusting when it rains)

I think my PO put in the lifetime guarentee brakes...and I'm incredibly thankful for it.

This isn't just part of owning a Jeep.. it's part of owning any vehicle over 10-15 years old with over 100K miles. I've never owned anything but a used car, and the older/higher miles you get, the reality of these problems is now your life unless you get another vehicle that's newer. Hang in there, and don't lose heart. Once you get everything figured out you'll have time to enjoy your ride.

ya lucky for you! I was driving along one day and got to a stop light. Stopped. Turned. Accelerated. Started losing power... smelled the burning brakes... and OH CRAP! Had to drive another 3 miles to my grandfather's workplace (they have a full auto shop set-up inside) with the brakes locked up and my buddy said he would take care of it. Pulled out the brakes... they fell to the floor in little dust particles! They probably hadn't been changed since it was made in 1991... I was very thankful that day! Talk about unsafe!

Actually it has 93,000... LOL!

But I get your point!
and i am not going to give up on it! I love it, and just can't wait until it is more or less done with mechanical issues so I can get out on the trails and start with my mods!

That's low miles for a YJ. You probably have a great ride on your hands. Just keep loving it and it'll keep loving you. Plus you have the WF at your fingertips.. there are a lot of smart and friendly people on here to help you through.

What was the water temp when all this was happening? Does the engine turn over now? A cracked block or head will heat up real fast and get hot enough to burn the paint off the head.

When your water pump goes it leaks all the water out of the bottom also you could have a loose hose. When the motor heats up like that it will shut itself down. But you could have cooked it

dye to the loss of power and stoping i would say you cooked the motor and cracked the block. easy way to tell though take and put a socket and breaker bar on the crank pully and turn the motor by hand is it turns then its not seized anyway.

okay, so tested it last night... it runs... had it in neutral, and it started right up no problem. revved up fine. but still idling at about 800-1000 RPMs. we are replacing the radiator today as well as the upper and lower hoses and water pump. so since it starts up and everything... do you think the new radiator will be all I have to fix or are there still possibly other problems beyond that??

I honestly have no idea what the temp was! I know that is a really bad answer, but something like this has never happened to me before, and I was really freaked out and was panicking! Didn't even look at the temp gauge
