just a little engine advice

ok guys i need some advice. i have noticed that on the end of the exhaust it is turning black. and it leaves some residue on the ground when i rev it up. now i was told its doing that because its running rich is that true. and if so how can i fix this. i feel like a idoit but i just don't know what to do. its not running any differnt. thanks in advanced

yup, that means it running rich. better too rich than too lean tho. how old are ur o2 sensors? that would be first place to look. EGR valve second. as long as its running ok and ur mileage isnt in the crapper, id leave it be.....
