I have an 89 YJ and the ignition key will not turn past the 1st position (manual transmission). New ignition or clutch ignition switch? Would love to fix this myself instead of towing to a garage. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Not sure if this is the issue. But I used to drive an old Scout. If the steering wheel was locked the key wouldn't turn. I had turn the wheel a little to get the key to turn.
Doubt that is it but thought I would suggest it anyway.
If wiggling the key around did the trick, you might have some loose parts in there. Might be time to replace the tumbler assembly. I would check to make sure that is the issue first though. The tumbler assembly comes out pretty easy, once you get it to turn to the on position. Or at least I think that is the position.
on my '91 YJ we replaced the ignition switch and the new key will not turn from the locked position at times. I am able to insert the old key and pull it out and then the new key works. Go figure, it's a Jeep.
Sounds like your tumblers are sticking. Time for some graphite lube I think.
My ignition switch is loose, I can pull the key out in any position, which is kinda handy at times. Like when I don't want to turn off the jeep but I need to unlock the rear gate to get something.
New ignition did the trick! YouTube videos really helped with the process. Make sure you have the proper tools before you start! Steering wheel puller and a steering wheel compression tool are a must.
Matt C, good idea, foggy old brain kept me from thinking of that. Thanks
