Lift and tire upsizing question

Forgive me if this is a stupid question. I recently purchase a 94 YJ and am loving every second. I am not the most mechanically inclined person but I am learning. I keep the YJ in my garage and I have about 5.5 inches of clearance due to a soffit that runs through it. It is currently on 26 tires. I want to go bigger but I also want to be able to keep it in the garage in the winter (not a daily driver). I am thinking a 2.5 inch lift and 28 inch tires.

So on to my question, my brother is telling me that upsizing to 28 inch tires will only add one inch of height to the vehicle because the other inch gain will be in the wheel well. Is this correct? I just can't seem to wrap my brain around this but like I said above, I am kind of new to this.

For 28" - 29" tires, you really don't need much lift at all. However, depending on how extreme you want to use your Jeep, you'll want enough room for articulation while off-roading. Here are some reference spots to check out....

Actually, you can put 31's on a non-lifted Wrangler and still drive, but it's gonna rub when you hit bumps and turns. Tire width also is a factor to consider too.

think about it like a pie cut from the center. If the pie was 2" bigger side to side, each piece would only be 1" longer as it simulates rotating from the center.

I understand the pie analogy. I guess what it boils down to is I can't raise the total height of my jeep more than 5.5 inches otherwise the roll bar will scrap the roof of my garage. What are my options as far as lift and tire upsize?

I say go 2" or 2.5" lift and 31's
31-26=5
5/2=2.5"

2.5"+2.5"=5"

You still have .5" to clear. or 1" if you go 2" lift. (Depending how worn out your springs are.

Or 31's with 3/4" shackle Lift and 1" body lift. (or trimmed fenders. 5.5" is a lot of room to mess with.
