Light bulb Condoms

I have been planning on swapping the bulbs in my dash for LED's because I can barely read the gauges. I opened up the dash and found that all my bulbs have blue rubber "condoms"on them. I took one of them off and that gauge is no readable. What are these and are they necessary?

They are only there to make the clear bulbs look better. More white looking than a light yellow light.

most gauge kits come with several different colors of these little rubbers so you can give your dash a custom look..added benefit is your gauge won't get pregnant

Thanks for the responses! I will be removing these until I get my led's. I get that they are supposed to soften the light but they soften it to the point where I can't see the gauges.

That was one of the first things I did when I bought my '95 YJ. The gauges are so much brighter now.
