locker questions

Eventually I would like to add lockers to my jeep. I have a few questions though. My jeep as it sits right now is a happy medium between street and trail use. When I eventually have the money and balls to take on the install, what should I do: rear or front? I want to stay in the medium I'm at now cause my wife likes cruising the streets and I like the trails. I've heard both, some say rear others front, I'm just looking for opinions. Also, i would be looking for a budget locker, I've heard lunch box?

rear is more beneficial as far as offroad useage, and the front would be nice bc you wouldnt notice it driving onroad, but in winter it will fight you.

I personally would do the rear. Do you still have the Dana 35 rear? I've had issues breaking the pins in lunchbox lockers such as the lock right. I have a super 35 set of axles that I got for free, so i run them with a full Detroit locker and 35"s. I've had zero issue over the last 6 years with medium and hard trail use.

I'm a big fan of locking the front first, and using a lunchbox like the Aussie. Just avoid 4wd slushy conditions, heavy snow is fine. You don't really need it until the snow gets deeper or it's slippery enough that the locker won't fight anyways. You just have to be more selective. The locker up front allows much more control over where your jeep goes, you can climb rocks etc much easier and with more control, instead of using the rear end to push you over, you use the front end to climb. I feel like running a front locker first really taught me a lot more about picking good lines etc.

I would do the rear end, but it will change your driving on road... but you get used to it. The tires squeal every time you turn a corner .... sounds tough!
Off road it is the bomb! You'll love it.
Jeeps are relatively light - it will add wear to your tires, but not much.

My Detroit will maybe chirp a tire on 1/20 turns. You just need to get used to it. I drive my jeep no more than 1,000 miles a year and don't have issues. If I drove it everyday I would be even better at driving it on the road.

I recently added a Spartan locker (because it came with a new center pin) to the front and i have to say i honestly love it.I cant tell it's there on the street and has made trails that i wouldn't go near before seem almost tame.I have heard the horror stories of putting them in the rear dana 35 and causing them to break but haven't experienced it.I am thinking of doing it now that i see what it did in the front,should make the yj unstoppable

If your doing automatic locker then you need to install it in the front the reason is these lockers lock when under torq so while in two wheel drive is open if you install in the rear it will be locked almost all the time even when you turn if your gassing. So that being said if you are getting a operator activated locker then you may look at the type of wheeling you do. If you do a lot of rocks then you may want it in the front so your always have traction to break up and over obstacles instead of dead heading your front tires and pushing with the rear. Now hill climbing you would like the most traction in the back just because that is where the weight goes. I personally don't have any and use the brake pedal with a power over brake but this method is very hard on the engine tranny and brakes also because I chose to drive a manual it gets very busy in the pilot seat. I will eventually lock everything when I see a good deal on used stuff.

I just put an Aussie locker in my D30 a few days ago. It's unnoticeable on the road in 2wd and its awesome off road. I'd definitely recommend one.

If you have a stock Dana 35 in the rear, don't lock it. Get a super 35 kit, 8.8 or Dana 44 out of a rubi. If you end up locking the rear, save up for a selectable. You can lock the front Dana 30, and u shouldn't have a problem. On road you won't notice it because your not in 4wd. I still recommend a selectable up front because its more difficult to steer with a locked front while in 4wd.

I have stock axels. From reading thru comments I think I'm going to go front locker. I have a while before I take on this project.....gotta save some money and do research on the process so I can do it myself. Thanks for your comments

I've just started kicking the same idea around and I've been doing some research today.
Being in Texas, snow is a non-issue, and my TJ is a weekend toy. It's mostly onroad with the occasional trail. No serious (i.e. damaging) rockcrawling.

Here's what I'm thinking...
Powertrax No-Slip lunchbox locker in front (disengaged unless in 4wd, and smoother-operating than the LockRight)
Eaton Detroit TrueTrac gear-driven (rather than clutch-driven) LSD in rear
I know the LSD will lose traction if a rear wheel gets airborn, but I'm not planning on it.

Anyone got more thoughts on the subject?

I would also do the rear first. I went with Detroits front and back and am very happy with them.

For streetability locking the front will be the best. Will be invisible in 2wd on the street and which ever lunch box locker you can get the best price for will do you just fine. Aussie, spartan or lock right.

I put a Loc-Right locker in my stock D35 C clip when I bought my YJ new in 95, I then put 4.56 gears in it. Ran that locker until about 2008 when it finally developed a crack in one of the disks and was banging a little to much, pulled that out and just recently purchased another one to replace it.
The locker worked perfectly for me, relatively cheap ($300), easy to install, didn't have to pull gears/axles etc...I highly recommend them.
As for placement, I will always put the locker in the rear axle. IMHO, thats where you need it the most when climbing, (really don't need a locker going downhill) weight transfer will place the most traction on the rear wheels, and the front wheels will get lighter.
Like I said earlier, this has been my experience, I live out west and most all my wheeling is rock crawling, if you use it for getting thru mud or snow a locker in front may be able to pull you thru the obstacle, but you will still have weight transfer to the rear from acceleration and thus more traction at the rear wheels....

I personally am putting a spartan locker in my front axle because I don't worry much about hill climbs but having my front locked would be nicer as I drive a lot in the city with my jeep so rear locker that's not selectable would not be fun

The axles are made up of 2 pieces with a spider gear in between that applies power to each wheel. The differential is set up to allow one wheel to slip if it looses traction. (Think of going around a circle, the outside tire needs to travel further than the inside wheel). A locker will 'lock' the axles together thus making both tires have pulling power, thus lots more traction. However, this can give adverse effects on the road --- your tires will chirp when cornering (the inside tire is trying to keep up with the outside tire). Locking both front and rear axles will give you TRUE 4 wheel drive, but man, I tell you, it can be hard to steer!

It makes sense to me to have the locker in the rear, but I'm hesitant to do it due to potential clunking in town when turning. I like the idea of LSD in the rear and locker up front, engaged only when in 4wd.
Anyone been using the PowerTrax NoSlip on your D35 rear? Any troubles in town?

I would not spend money on a d35. I would lock the front first unless all you do is climbs. Ill be running an LsD 8.8 for a while until I lock it.

That's what I'm doing now. Aussie locker in the front and LSD in my 8.8. I've been thinking about locking it, but it seems to do everything I want it to now. Maybe when its not the DD anymore...

What's the easiest locker to install in the front? I'm doing this myself in my driveway and I've never done anything like this before. I was reading up on one the other day, can't remember what one at the moment, but says no special tools needed and you don't have to remove the axels. I think it may have been the spartan? But it was only like $300 and estimated time was like an hour and a half install.

Well I can change brakes like a champ lol so it'll be one of those when it comes down to it. Nothing on my jeep is too crazy so no reason for a thousand dollar locker for me. The only reason I bought the jeep was to do trail rides with my son. I'm not trying to build a rock buggy.....as awesome as that would be I don't have the time or budget to devote to it
