lost fifth gear

Was driving down highway and suddenly lost fifth gear. Just started shaking and making chunking sound. All rest of gears work fine. What could it be? And what do I need to do to fix.

Common issue.

Upgrade to AX15 transmission instead of AX5. They don't like more than 31's in 5th gear at highway speeds for long.

YJ's with 4.2L, maybe the 4.0s, and older cherokees with 4.0's.

Is this still an issue if you regeared to 4.88s on 33" tires?

Dodge 4cyl trucks have bell housings that fit onto the back of a 4cyl Jeep. Those 4cyl dodges have AX15s.

Not sure if the YJ and TJ 2.5 engines are the same though. Just noticed that this was a YJ thing.

Same bolt pattern if I remember correctly.

Just find and old 4-banger Dakota 5spd and pull the whole trans if it works.

Yes it is still an issue.

It is too much for the tranny to take in 5th gear trying to pull those tires.

But I would be willing to buy your 4.10 gears to help you out!

I lost 5th as soon as I put on 33's, it still works, but my YJ cant get out of its own way at any speed in 5th, so I pretend I have a 4 speed.....

So a 4 banger Dakota will fit right in without customizing anything. What years would I be looking for

A few thing to know about swapping in a AX15. They are 6.5" longer and uses a 10 spline input/23 spline output shaft, AX5 uses a 14 spline input/21 spline output shaft so try to get a match set (trans & transfre case) out of a '89 on YJ 4.2/4.0, the drive shafts need to be changed and a new clutch. If you cant find a matched set you will to change the transfer case input shaft. Its not hard to do but you will need the right one there are a few differant one, you will need one for a NP231 for a AX15 from 89-94, I believe that 95 was the year they changed the pitch on the gears. The one it mates up to in the case is a non-serviceable gear which means it comes with the front half of the case. (see yesterdays post "What I did to my YJ)

I wonder how much the AX15 runs at a junk yard?

Hey I just saw this - sorry man I already have 4.88s. The reason I ask is because all gears engage fine but 5th gear you can feel a bit of a... bump I guess you could call it. No one notices but me, i use finesse to get it into 5th in case its starting to go.
