maintenance required- A/C clutch relay.

I just bought my 1991 YJ & it has a warning light on (maintenance required). So I hooked it to my auto code scanner & the problem is... A/C Clutch Relay 033 circuit.

My YJ has never had A/C so I don't know what to do. I've already tried to reset the computer but the warning light always comes back on.

Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

I have a 1991 Wrangler Islander
4.0 liter engine
5 spd Manual transmission
No A/C (non air conditioned)

your light is working correctly. it is sensing that the relay is inop. with no A/C, this code (033) should be ignored.

I agree to ignore the code since it doesn't apply but there has to be a way to turn off the light. Although, I believe on a 91 that light could mean that you need to replace the O2 sensor. I know on my 89 it has to be replaced at 88,500 miles. However, there is no light. They got a little more sophisticated in the 91's. Might be a coincidence because the scanner is going to detect an inop. a/c clutch relay because there isn't one. I vote that it's a warning that the O2 sensor should be replaced because it's "maintenance required".

Ignoring the warning light might mean ignoring a potentially damaging situation so I'm not enthusiastic about doing that. Could it possibly be a blown fuse?
If it was the Oxygen sensor why wouldn't that code be the one that comes up?

The previous owner replaced the motor with a Jeep dealership crate motor something like 40K miles ago. Could this have something to do with it?

Didn't realize you have a "new" crate motor in there. Thought you had an original set up. That makes all the difference. Your O2 sensor is fine then. Disregard my suggestion. The light being on is most likely due to the new motor/install. The computer probably isn't recognizing something and it stays on. I bet it has been on for 40k miles. Since it has to do with A/C that you don't have I would say ignore it. Maybe a dealer can cancel the code/light but I'm sure they'll charge you a few $ to do it. Or, try and ignore it if you don't want to just disconnect the bulb. It probably is not on a separate fuse so pulling one might cause another problem.

try disconnecting the battery for 15-20 minutes then reconnect. this should reset the ecm so it can "learn" the inputs.

ON 90 and earlier models there was a maintenance timer that came on at 82,500 miles, this could be disconnected. On 91 later the timer had to be reset with a "special tool" that a dealer has or many parts stores

I'm not trying to nit pick your info. at all but the 89 4.2's don't have maintenance timers/lights. It would have to be 90's and above. The only thing in the manual for the 89 4.2 is that the O2 sensor is supposed to be replaced at 88,500 miles. The 89's don't throw codes.

NAVYCHIEF- I've had the battery disconnected when I replaced the skid plate so I know that doesn't reset things.

Does anyone know anything about the "Special Tool" GaryK wrote about?? I'd like to buy the tool and reset things myself, but I probably need to know the name of the tool or what exactly it resets. Wouldn't the computer be reset?

I've had the same problem with no ac in my jeep but get ac relay code. Pretty sure I replaced the o2 sensor a d it was good. And if its the right problem. After you replace the sensor start and shut off the jeep 7 or 8 times and the light will go out

Thanks RjeepR, it's worth a try. I'll pick up one from the auto parts store.
It looks like I just screw in the sensor into the exhaust pipe & connect it to the wiring harness, right?

I was quoting the Haynes Manual, I am assuming the special tool was a scan tool which is kind of expensive just to reset the ecu timer. If NavyChief's suggestion doesn't work try a local parts store and see if they can reset it.

Yeah there is one connector and the sensor screws in. It might be a bit tough to get out. And advance auto will let u use there scan tool to clear the code free, but if you just cycle the engine on and off I think 8 times the computer should reset itself

UPDATE: 2 Years Later
I've,
-replaced the O2 sensor
-disconnected the battery
-cycled the key on and off 7 times then 8 times
-plugged in the ODB computer and cleared it a couple of times.

...and nothing has worked. The red "maintenance required" light still glows as bright as it did 2 years ago.

I think I'm going to just pull the little light bulb, when I have the time.
I appreciate the suggestions everybody.

I had my light come on and could not clear it. Went to the Jeep dealership, and they told me that in 1991 they didn't know how long the O2 sensor would last and need replacing, so the light comes on after a certain mileage. They did not have an OBDI tool so had to go to another dealership that had one and they cleared the code and didn't charge me to do it.

Unfortunately I've already replaced my O2 sensor and I've cleared the code several times my personal handheld ODBI. I'll give a call to my local stealership and see if they can take a quick care of it. Thanks
