Max amount of backspacing

I am looking to keep that "tucked" look to keep the tires under the jeep if/when I lift it.

What is the maximum backspacing I can take on a 15 inch wheel? I am looking at 15x8 inch wheels and a 32 or 33 inch tire.

Is is 3.75 inches?

I'm sure there are guys that can give you some exact numbers, but a lot of the backspacking/tire width issues comes down to how much turning radius you are willing to loose. I have 235/75/15 roughly 29" with stock rims and at full lock, I am already within an inch or so of hitting the springs. If you adjust the steering stops out (reducing turning radius) you can get away with a wider/taller tire and still keep them under the fender flairs -- up to a certain point.

Good idea, I like the look of the CJ jeeps, seems like they can put a lot of tire under the fenders. I don't want a lot of tire sticking out to keep the factory profile as much as possible. I see lots of jeeps with a lot of tire sticking out and it occurs to me that it may be putting undue stress on the bearings, etc, especially already turning more weight.

That's one of the problems with the YJ, although I still love them. They made the springs wider (further apart) than the CJ's for stability on the street. The springs on the CJs are closer together, so you can put a fatter tire under there and they won't rub. I'm like you, I like them to be more under the Jeep than sticking out.

I have a 91YJ 2.5L with a 4 inch Rough Country Lift. I just replaced the tires and wheels. The previous owner had put 33x12.5x15 on American Racing Steel wheels (15x8) that hat 4.5 inch backspacing. That backspacing is pretty close to stock. Once the larger tires were added they rubbed on the leaf springs and the sway bar. In an effort to make the vehicle more usable I have dropped down to a 31x10.5x15 tire and changed to a wheel with 3.75 backspacing. This gives a ton more room for the tires and wheels in full turn lock. NO MORE RUBBING. It also improves the turning radius not hurts it. With these new wheels I could probably go back to a 33 inch tire if I chose to but the 31 inch BFGs are great on the road and are more then enough to get me through the trails. If you go with a 33 inch tire you will need at least 4.0 or 3.75 back spacking. Just get the 3.75 back spacing and then you will be all set to run 32 or 33.
