Might buy my first yj......but

I was considering buying a yj from a family friend. It is a 91 islander 6cyl. And was wondering what to look out for on these...is there a faq somewhere floating around the net? It is pretty rusty. The area around the winshield, the rear corners and the doors all have a good amount of rust. Under the vehicle it doesn't look that bad at all.

I have a lot of expirience with body work, so I am not too worried, plus the teal paint has got to go. But I am worried about the structural integrity, where should i look to make sure the jeep is safe.

On the plus side it runs like a champ. The motor is strong. It shifts through the gears fine, brakes/steering seem in good shape. The tires are newer. It does "clunk" a little bit around turns....balljoints? The interior has a ripped drivers seat and the drivers window zipper is broke (per chance anyone know where to get these priced reasonably). But other than that the rest of the top and interior is in great shape.

Should I buy a rusty yj, or stay far away? He's asking $700, I thought a running wrangler for that price seems cheap. It would be a weekend toy, and maybe a dd during nice weather.

At $70o you can fix a lot of sin with minimal investment. Big areas are the floor pans up front, frame at the shock mounts and leaf spring shackle connections.

thats an awesome deal on a running wrangler. also check the very rear of the frame for rot, and windshield frame also.

If you get any more Jeeps, you'll need to get a wide angle lens to take the photo for your sig line.

Schwebel: Assuming it's a Bestop, you can buy a replacement window panel from us (window and fabric). We don't sell just the zippers, but our customer service guys have a few places where you can find matching ones. 800-845-3567.

I'd recommend a boat-canvas place to resew stuff, if needed.

for the price i would say go for it but know that u are most likely getting into a project but don't worry the yj is super easy to work on and for 700 if the frame is solid then its worth it if u have a chance though take and tap the frame with a hammer just to be sure (ask me how i know this) big spots rear shackels and steering box are the commonest points

Schwebel: Did you buy it?

This is what I'd do with a $700 Wrangler:
-Paint it with rattle cans. Paint things like "I'm with stupid" on the passenger door. Or whatever. Just make it grungy as hell.
-Buy decent tires from Craigslist.
-Make sure the rollbar and seatbelts are good.
-Thrash it.
-Repeat as necessary.

Did you see the Top Gear where they tried to kill an old Toyota truck? I'd do that.
