more startup problems...

Hi guys, I've got a 92' 2.5L stick and can't seem to get it to start up by turning the key. It will kick over by push starting just fine and runs like normal but when I turn they key all I get is the fuel pump engages and I can hear the starter motor spinning but no turnover. I pulled the starter and ran it down to Autozone and the solenoid engaged like they said it was supposed to. I figured it might be worn teeth on the flywheel so I replaced it and the clutch but still no good. I pulled the top off of the starter relay to try manually engaging it and it sends power to the starter just like it's supposed to. Anyone have any suggestions?

Is the starter spinning the flywheel or just spinning freely?

It's spinning free I think. The engine isn't being turned over as if the solenoid weren't engaging. I'm pretty sure it's not an electrical problem because it's obviously getting power. What's really frying my brain is that I started thinking maybe I had the wrong starter and that the teeth weren't lining up with the flywheel but it worked for the first few weeks just fine.

sounds like the "planetary gears" on the starter motor are broken.

Just a follow up, I was dating a girl that worked at autozone and had her test the bloody starter repeatedly and trusted her that it was good. Well since I was scared to call her out (girlfriend after all) I didn't push the issue and changed the flywheel thinking maybe I had worn/broken teeth. Nope, she was an idiot and didn't notice that the gear in the starter was broken internally so it spun while there was no pressure against it and thus passed their tester but the gear wasn't actually turning while against the flywheel. Hope this helps future victims of bad advice.

I am no mechanic here but I use to own a 95 wrangler with a 2.5L. Check your fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, cylinoid, fuel injectors, fuel relay and fuses. I work on my wrangler all the time which I now have a 90 with a 4.2L V6. I miss my 2.5L fuel injection because the gear ratio is lower for the off road. If you have checked all of these things and still having issues get a haynes and chilton manuals and learn your vehicle to save you money. Start with the trouble shooting area and go from there. If all else fails, go online to craigslist for a master mechanic or network with jeep clubs or simply go to a shop such as pepboys for repairs.
