Motor ?'s

Today I found out the 5th cylinder needs new rings. I have 30psi in the 5th and 100 in the rest. I did a leak down test and found it blows out the tail pipe. So I loosened the push rod and springs and it blows out the dipstick. Also when I turn it over it blows smoke out the pvc valve pretty good.

Anyway I want to no the best cheap ring kit out and what to get first I need to pull it out and do the measurements

Also what else do I need to replace

The motor is new reman so everything is new internally it's a 4.2 out of a 88

100 psi isn't enough on all the others, i would not just re ring that motor, that may fix it all or may not, if that is a reman motor with bad compression i'd start over unless you can get that reman motor warrantied.

I think the warranty is up it has sat for 2 years after the motor was put in you don't think doing rings in all cylinders will be enough to fix it I'm not real familiar with rebuilds and what not

Really like the help Doc

well i can't say for sure, and it is possible its just the rings. depends on how far you wanna go. do a wet compression test on the 100 psi cylinders. if it goes up closer to where it should be then you'd probably be in good shape. the pistons have to come out the top anyway, so you'll be removing the head, it would be silly not to have the head tested and machined since you have problems with the motor though.

are you gonna try to get away with honing the cylinders and putting new rings in?

thats probably what i'd do, the block can stay in if you want it to, pull the pistions, hone the cylinders, replace the rings, and put the head back on after testing and machining. it wouldn't hurt to measure the bore, and maybe have someone take a look that is familiar with engine rebuilding, make sure something didn't go bad in the rebuilding of that motor, impropoer machining or something.
