There's not a lot you can do with the factory AX5. It's weak and won't handle much more than the 2.5 puts out... and even then it's been known to break. If you're going to do the 4.3 out of a blazer (or any of the Vortec motors including the 350), consider an SM465 or SM420 manual in place of the 2.5. They are plentiful and cheap. I just bought an SM465 off a guy on Craigslist for $100 including the clutch, bellhousing, PTO assembly, flywheel and the tranny itself. They come in 2WD or 4WD models and either can be mated to the NP231J transfer case with an adapter from Novak.

I would not seriously consider keeping the trans you have.

If you get a donor vehicle complete, you'll not only get all the bracketry and whatnot included, but you'll have 3 components that you know will work together without adapters. Make sure the front drop matches, and at worst you'll need motor mounts and have to get your driveshafts modded a little.

Or you can hand pick specific engine, trans, play the adapter game, and maybe still need mounts and shafts.

Have you looked into XJ cherokees? They are wicked cheap in our area... planning a DJ5 conversion and would like to go GM350, but cherokees are just so darn cheap it's hard to resist

What Cherokees make good donors and what ones to avoid. Including axles

The AX15 isn't a bad transmission. 5 Speed, came behind the 4.0L engine. There's brackets to adapt it to the 4.3 you were talking about:

Adapting Chevrolet & GM Engines to the Jeep AX15 Transmission
