Too narrow, the late '90s Explorer is as close as you are going to get, and its about 5/8" thinner....

I believe that 96 through 2001 will work and they will have rear disc brakes.

Yep, and they will be the 31spline shaft instead of 28 or whatever the stangs are.. The gear ratios are also the same as a lot of wranglers. 3.55, 3.73, 4.10...

Yeah they should work. I dont know about back there but here there are rows of exploders in wrecking yards. You should be able to take your pic I think. There will be a code on the door that will tell you gear ratios and if its limited slip or not. The limited slip can be a weak spot. Note that I said can...

What are the specs??? Is it the same width??? Spline count in axles 29 or 31???

I got mine out of a 98 Exploder, 31 spline, 4:11 open carrier.

About ready to set it up (pending this other YJ im picking up Sunday)

Explorer model info:
91-94 = drums
95-01 = discs

Yes, the Merc Mountaineers had 8.8's

The Mazda Navajo came with the 8.8 too
