my jeep dream almost turned nightmare

Hello jeep world! Oh how I have been waiting to say that. Anywho figured you all might get a good kick out of my first jeep buying/upkeep experience. But first let me start my story by Saying my love of jeeps started because a friend of mine has a tj and would take me out for rides in it and would actually let me take the rig out on my own all I can say is that.once I drove one I HAD to own one. So I start the craigslist hunt! Found and bought my yj (I affectionately reffer to him as the "old bastard") the guy I bought it from had just had it pass inspection only two months prior to my buying it so I figure it should pass right away.....not....so I bring it to my friendsmechanic who proceeds to tell me what a pile of rusted crap it was and that id be lucky to get my money back by parting it out. I was crying and so sad because at that point my jeep dream was dying. He then offers to buy it from me and trys to sell me another one....what a jerk!!!!!' I refuse of course I know at this point I need a second opinion! But the jerk red flags my jeep. Anyways I finally bring it to my friends dads shop and he breaks it down for me and guess what it wasn't a pile after all. He even said for a 92 it wasn't bad just getting scaley as he called it..so he put me in touch with a body work guy who is going to be replacing the one body mount that has to be fixed as well as sand blast and line the rest of my frame. My dream is alive and I am staying in the jeep world for as long as I can....

Now for all the people reading this and thought why does she call her jeep the old bastard well its a 92 its only a year younger then me. It has the 2.5l engine which as u all know is lacking in power great on gas however. And because it has the old school "ahhhhoooooooooogahh" horns in it I don't know why its adopted his name but he has and if u all saw him I think u would understand

Don't listen to anyone about your jeep. Anything on that thing is either repairable or replaceable. I had a 92 4.0. What a fun project that was. I wish you the best if luck! Thanks for sharing your story and welcome!

I know I thought my Gage was messed up or something because it was two hour drive from where I live I topped it off and the Gage only moved a tiny little bit I brought it home a month ago and still haven't had to put gas in it on a quarter tank right now but the engine has been tuned regularly all new hoses and breaks belt plugs everything is either new or been kept up with under the hood

You will get a lot of suggestion

However, my first suggestion would be a Haynes, or other manual on the Wrangler. That would be in the $20 range. Then go through it and learn the basics about how the Jeep is put together and how the various systems work. Especially the cooling, ignition, fuel, brakes.

Look around for a good Jeep or 4x4 club that has your kind of activities. That will be your best source of reliable information.

Welcome from another New Hampshha jeeper...best group I've found to run around the state with is the ENH (explore new hampshire) group. Great people, and they do all kinds of runs all over the state from moderate to extreme. First run for the year is end of May and booked solid.
Keep in mind if you are new to jeeping in NH, that most of the Class VI roads are off limits until June 1 because of mud/snow, etc. Doesn't leave us much of the year left to run but we manage!

Just FYI... The 4 and 6 cylinder Jeep engines get pretty much the SAME gas mileage. That's 17-19mpg in STOCK from, it goes downhill from there. No way you're getting 26mpg unless your commute is downhill both ways

My Jeep is nearly stock as can be and I'm managing about 18mpg highway with my 2.5L. Just because it's a 4 cylinder engine does not mean it's more fuel efficient

Get pics up.

Because im near empty and did the math of miles traveled vs. How much gas I put in again im not 100% but that tank lasted me a super long time way longer then I thought it would... im not lying maybe my Gage is mest up or something because it really didn't even start going down until a week or two after I filled it...

Hey,
I have a 92 as well and fuel gauge is busted is I get to guess when it's low.
My plan was to do a V8 swap when I blew up the 2.5. Well its been 6 yrs and I still have the 2.5 with just over 100,000 miles on it.
And I finally get to lift it next week!! Can't wait

I wanted to swap my engine to but because the 2.5 still is running good with 142000 I desided to wait until it dies and my mechanic said I will be waiting a long time and these 2.5 engines run forever!!!! So my money will go to improving it in other ways like mudding tires

sounds like the 15/20 gal conversion

There is a tube that goes into the gas tank that causes the fuel to back up and that shuts off the pump when it gets full. Chrysler had the brilliant idea that they could reduce material and increase price. So, they put a long tube in standard. That extended down into the tank further and limited the fill to 15 gallons.

Then, they could sell you a 20 gallon tank for extra money and all they did was put in a shorter tube, allowing the tank to fill completely.

You can pull that tube out, cut if off and put it back in. That lets the tank fill to 20 gallons. However, the gauge is still a 15 gallon tank and the gauge reads full when it has 15 gallons in it.

If the modification is done, you have 5 gallons extra in the tank is full. You have to burn that off before the gauge starts to move. Still runs out when gets down to empty on the gauge.

Sounds like the PO did that modification. You can tell by how much you put in. If it is down at 1/4 or so and you put in more than 12 gallons, you have had the modification done. Good mod as it doesn't screw up the gauge, just longer to come off full.

You know that sounds about right when I filled it to bring it home it was on a half tank and it took 55 to fill it from half.

The only way to get an accurate assessment of your gas mileage is to:

1) fill the tank with gas
2) note your mileage or reset your odometer to zero
3) drive the Jeep (preferably until near empty)
4) fill the tank with gas
5) note the number of gallons of gas needed to fill the tank
6) calculate the number of miles driven between fill-ups
7) # gallons diveded by number of miles driven = MPG
