My Jeep keeps shutting off..

Okay, I'm having an issue with my Jeep. Grrr.

I just recently bought an 89 Wrangler, pretty much stole it really. But anyways, the truck was bought from a family friend who I'm pretty sure cleared the engine lights off the Jeep.

The Jeep (when in drive) runs perfectly fine and shifts like it's supposed too. Now, when the Jeep is put in Reverse, it automatically shits off. I was thinking MAF sensor, but apparently these do not have MAF sensors? Weird. My second guess was trans/cooler lines. I know in some Fords (Ew) it's common for them to shut off for safety or something like that.

I'm not that mechanically inclined so I could be way off here.

Thank you.

Does it buck and stall or just shut down? Bucking and stall could indicate bad torque converter, just shutting down could indicate bad neutral safety switch or other electrical problem. Is it the original trans?

Yes, everything is original. Jeep sits with 121xxx. It bucks maybe twice? then shuts off. You have to rev it really high a couple times, switch to to Reverse, rev a couple times, then basically throw it in drive before it shuts off.

I am signing on to get the real answer, but I would be suspecting tranny here... not torque converter because it runs OK in forward.

If you have a carb'd 4.2, which it seems like you do because there's no MAF sensor or any others, you could be looking at a carb problem. I would start there. I don't understand "cleared the engine lights". There are no engine lights except when at approx. 88,500 miles you will get a light which means to replace the O2 sensor. That was probably disconnected. It's a very basic system; no lights, no codes.

^^^^^ if he has no issue in forward..... HOW could a carb issue be present in ONLY reverse????

Alright, I'm new to the Jeep to be 100% honest with you. So I was unsure about the engine light thing, thanks for clearing that for me. I'll have one of my mechanic buddies take a look at it. Just wanted a good head start on what problems to look for.

Thanks for all the information guys, appreciate it!!

I guess I missed that part. I would think that it might have something to do with the trans. like was said. Bad neutral safety switch possibly?
