1997 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L Engine. I turn the key, all the lights come on but it will not click or turn over. I have tested the starter myself and removed it and taken it to the parts store it is good. If I connect the small wire on the celinoid to the + on the battery it starts right up. Checked all the fuses, replaced the Malfunction switch fuse 20 amp(blown) , replaced the starter relay both under the hood. Battery is good and all the wireing looks good. Any ideas?
You most likely have a broken actuator pin in the key switch on the steering column a lot of similar posts on the TJ tech forum with links to online videos showing exactly how to repair it
The ignition switch (not the key switch, but what the key switch actually moves to start the engine). Is located down on the steering, column, up under the dash. You can unplug the wire harness clipped to it, and get a jumper wire the same gauge as the wires that are on the switch, and try jumping it from one terminal to the other. If it rolls the motor over, replace the ignition switch.
Its on the top of the column, toward the gas pedal side. The one on the other side of the column is the high beam/low beam switch. They both have a metal rod that runs down the column that actuate them.
With some jeeps, it's hard to tell what year they are! Axles from TJ in YJs.....family rollbars replacing sports bars, engine this.....transfer that.....automatic now. I've even got Ford parts in her.....8.8, and of course there is that Tarus electric fan.
Come to think about it.....I need to change my vehicle profile to include several now. Lol
Sorry for the hi-jack, and to the OP, glad you found out what the problem was. And thank you for responding back of what the fix was. Many don't come back and tell us if it got fixed and how.
got it fixed thank you. it was the actuator pin for the ignition.
