Need Drivetrain Swap advice for Yj

My son recently took out my 94 Yj and I had to rescue him when he found out that they don't float. So he not only threw a rod out the side of the 4 cylinder motor but it must have been inthe water for a while because after we bought a junk motor from a friend the automatic trans now won't shift. I know it is underpowered with the factory 4 so I was looking for advice for the best drivetrain I can get for the money. My son will be driving it most of the time just back and forth to school, weekend trips, and in the woods on trails and a little mud, nothing drastic at all. So we are looking for something with amore power than the 4 banger had, but don't need a gas guzzling v8 either. I want to stick with an automatic too. Iwas told by a local person that a Chevy 4.3 v-6 with the 4L60E trans is the way to go. I would love to hear from someone who has done this swap or upgraded in a different way. Any help and/or comments are appreciated. Thanks !!

boooo chey drive train.

get a donor cherokee 4.0, swap the whole thing over. little difference w/ t case clocking but any engine swap requires work. 4.0 is a great motor, and the aw4 trans in the xj's are bullet proof.

oh yeah, welcome to the forum yj brotha.

the 4.3 sounds good but I would go with a 700r4 tranny with a gate shifter and scrap the d35

After owning an Astro with the Vortec 4.3/4L60E I will never own that setup again. I'd run a turbo on the 4 banger and plug the vent on a replacement trans were it me.

4bangerJP.com has plenty of info on a turbo setup.

4.0L will make things easy for the install... as stated find a junk XJ. Remove everything and be happy. Or of course a junk YJ.

I'm going to jump in on the cherokee 4.0L swap. The only other thing I would recommend is a Cummins 4BT. The cherokee will be a fairly straight forward swap where as the cummins will take a bit more work but will provide more torque and better mpg.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all the help - will I need to transfer the entire wiring harness too for the 4.0 swap ? or can the original 4 cylinder one just be modified ?

I have done the 4.3 swap in my cj and it worked great. it is an easy swap if you use an aftermarket wiring harness. As far as the tranny I used a th350, it is bulletproof and a junkyard trans. you can find them anywhere cheap, the 700r4 has electronics and IMHO electronics and an offroad vehicle are a bad thing .

The 4.3 has plenty of power and the parts availability is huge so you wont have issues finding replacements or upgrades. I am currently putting a 4.3 into a CJ5 that a friend of mine brought over. If you decide to go that route let me know and I can provide you with links for most of the parts needed to complete the swap.

Does he have to move the motor mounts to go from the 4cyl to the 4.0?
