Need help with reinforcement of rear crossmember on YJ

This one has been posted in Builders Corner as well:

I've been trying to prep the rear part of the frame for mounting rear bumper. I have one with a towing hitch on it attached straight on and one day needed to transport 2 bikes and a bicycle trailer for a few miles on one of those towing hitch mounted small platforms. To make a long story short by the end of the trip that poor thing was almost touching the ground and the crossmember it was attached to was twisting like a spring under its weight. So I figured that in this condition it's most definitely not going to be capable of handling the bumper with just a tire carrier let along any more cargo.

So, in light of that I started wondering if anyone had similar issue and what's been done to fix it. Pix a greatly appreciated. thanks a bunch in advance.

I can't say for sure what should be done to fix it. Cut it off and weld in some 1/4" but really it's just a cosmetic piece and good enough for the bumperettes. Any bumper needs to be tied into the frame itself. You could cut that out and mount a 1/4 wall tube and weld it in yu just need to make sure there is cl3earence for the shackles.

Lots of things can be done for sure.

Are there any bolt-on solutions of any kind?

It's just an original configuration of YJ's rear crossmember. I'll try to shoot some tomorrow.

Are you talking about the bar that has 3 holes in it for ball hitch?
Do you mean number 8?

I'm wondering where the hitch was mounted? Most bumpers i've looked at mount to the area thats welded to the frame. Even the stock ball hitch [#8 on my first pic] mounts to the underside of that area.

GenRight Jeep TJ/LJ, YJ Rear Crossmember Inner Reinforcement Plate
This was a nice find, I might order this myself.

Here, I got one. It's mounted straight on the spots where bumperets were and the hitch is welded on directly on it underneath.

That reinforcement plate looks like a square 3/16 square tube with holes drilled in it...
