Need More Cowbell - 91 YJ 2.5L noise

Actually need less cowbell...while driving, I'm getting this cowbell/wind chime noise coming from underneath. It's intermittent, whether I have the clutch depressed or not, and occurs mostly in 4th & 5th gear. My guess at this point is exhaust-related, but I'm a novice at diagnosing these things. Any ideas what it could be, or how to better pinpoint where it's coming from?

Shake the exhaust pipe around to see if it itself is banging on something else metal, or if something is inside of it. It's pretty hard for a rock to get all the way up the tailpipe, either you have a chopped exhaust or the catalytic converter is falling apart and pieces of it are inside the pipe.

Post up a video, perhaps?

I have seen where people actually hang a cowbell up underneath their rig to let them know before a big rock hits something vital

Get underneath and pound around on anything that looks suspicious. Use a rubber hammer, pound on the cat & muffler. Shake the E-brake cables (they could be vibrating like a reed). Look for anything loose or not stock.

You state the noise is in 4th and 5th gear. It may not be related to what gear your trans is in, but related to how fast the vehicle is travelling.

You can have an assistant ride in the back seat and have them climb around to determine where the noise is the loudest.

At highway speeds, wind whistling over an open hole can make an annoying noise, like blowing across an open bottle top.

Good Luck, L.M.

Found it...the rubber bracket that holds the pipe coming out of the muffler (like a hanger) split, so that pipe is dangling freely back there. Now to find where to purchase a replacement.

Thanks for all the help. Feel kinda stupid given how easy it was once I got underneath, but posted before I ever looked, assuming it was more serious than that.

Every time I see the title of your post, I see Will Ferrell with the short shirt in that cowbell skit......... hilarious!!
