need more horsepower

I am interested in purchasing a 97 wrangler with a 4cyl manual trans from a friend of mine. The Jeep is in great shape and runs good. Could use more get up and go. What is the best way to add horsepower?

If it's got bigger tires the ONLY real solution while keeping the 2.5 is to regear it to match the tires. After that, there are hundreds of threads out there covering all the things one can do to get a bit more pep out of a 2.5. I am currently trying to convince dad to put a 4.0 throttle body on his 2.5 dakota.

Seriously though, 4.0 tb swap, ford 19lb injectors, regear, Taurus electric fan. There's a lot you can do. Honestly if you're looking for a lot more just go with a motor swap, those mods give negligible hp

Jeeping isn't about horse power. It's not a race car, it is the direct descendent of a military vehicle. Torque is what really matters.

Not looking to do a motor swap. The thing runs good. Just a little more horsepower is all I would be looking for. Are there aftermarket parts I can install to get more.

Only aftermarket part I have. Enjoy it, not worth the hassle on the 2.5. Drive till it blows then upgrade.

I agree I don't think there is a lot that can be done that is even going to be noticeable

When I got my 91 the exhaust was shot. Leaking before the muffler and after. I replaced the exhaust and deleted the cat. The power is much smoother but it's still not a performance car. It's all about utility and low end torque. It takes a while to get up to speed, but the low end power is great, and it's only a 2.5.

People will tell you that the 4 bangers aren't enough all the time. But man I'll tell you, do the right things to it, and they can seriously move. A friend who drives a 4.0 raced me on a dirt stretch, and I had him all the way through 3rd gear. With everything I did, it only costed me around 200 bucks. If you're seriously interested, PM me! It's my DailyDriver and trail rig.

Went to a good junkyard, pulled 4.0 injectors and throttle body, did away with the cat (shh), turbo muffler, built my own CAI (routed the crankcase vent somewhere else because it's basically recycling exhaust fumes), already has 4.10 gearing stock which I like, and put a variable resistor on the coolant temp sensor so I can tune the richness of the fuel injection from in the cab. Looking for a good price on a purple cam currently.

After camming, going to look for a stock srt-4 turbo to run low boost!

Not much , I had a 98 Tj when the 2.5 went up I was dumb and tried to build it up. I did a E fan, 4.0 tb/spacer, 19# injectors , msd ignition , mopar purple cam , ported the head and intake , added a air raid cai, yella terra roller rockers , banks header and catback with a free flow cat. It had more power but my 4.2L has more balls then the built 2.5 ever had. And yes the Tj had 4.88's and 33's so it was geared properly.

I am obviously new to the Jeep thing. I have the opportunity to get into this Jeep at a good price and I this very clean and well maintained. $ is an issue so I was trying to get some inexpensive ideas for now. In two years this will go to my son and I will be getting a different one. Something with a 4.0 for sure. Thanks for everyones input. Keep it coming

2.5L is a good engine, not the fastest with 120 horses pushing a giant brick around town, but it works fine.

I learned to put it this way... you gotta stop trying to upgrade your 2.5 and start trying to downgrade your expectations.. she's a tough engine but at the end of the day its a 4 cylinder trying to push around tractor tires. So I let her be and eventually ill throw a bigger engine in

Where's a good place to buy your 4.88 gears? I have a 92 yj with a 94 2.5L. It has 31" tires. Otherwise bone stock.

That's the approach I am going to take. I am sure I will be thrilled just to riding around without the top on enjoying the ride.
