Need to clarify - engaging 4wd

Ok - so this may be covered on here, but I want to get some consensus among YJ owners. I have a '93 automatic, and I use 4wd once every couple of months - and my shifter sticks HARD every time I engage, so I typically get some man help to push it into place. (being a Jeep girl has it's advantages)

I'm in the sand so I'm usually trying to get 4Hi to engage and I have had the following "advice" from male friends:

- put the Jeep in neutral, then shift into 4Hi, then back into drive and roll forward (I'm pretty sure this is what you need to do for 4Lo)

- put the Jeep into park, then shift into 4Hi, keep pressure on the shifter and then put into drive and give a little gas while holding the shifter to engage (I've gotten this to work most of the time, not sure if I'm doing damage)

I have had a combination of the above done and just when I think I've got it I realize I'm digging down in a sand pit (dash light or not).

So YJ's...can everyone agree on how to do this?

I have a 93, but with a 5sp. so I went out and got the owner's manual. It says, "To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed."

I think the problem is that you are trying to shift while stopped. I would try just letting off the gas while driving and shifting the lever.

With the 5 speed, I just push in the clutch, move the lever and then let the clutch back out. I have never had a problem and the lever never "sticks hard".

It is a shift on the fly for 4 hi-can be done at speeds up to 55(any higher is doable but pushing it) just let off the gas/shift to 4 hi/ hit the gas. For 4 low put in neutral at a stop/shift to 4 low/ put in drive and give it a little gas.

Maybe extending the transfer case shift lever might help with shifting to 4 hi or 4 low.
Someone else may be able to clarify if the trans and transfer case levers are the same diamater and thread.

It could be a loose or lost bolt on the rod that connects the shifter mechanism to the transfer case selector. There's not alot to the mechanism. See photo on this e-bay part.

My prayer is usually me muttering (or yelling depending on traffic) "c'mon baby you can do it!" and then I kind of scootch back and forth in my seat once as if that will propel my Jeep (sarge) any faster. I'm told it's adorable.

But a very cool 4x4 prayer:
yea though I rock crawl through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no trail; for thou art modified;
thy rig and thy lockers they comfort me.

Hey zombiekiller were you trying to sell your jeep on craigslist in the Raleigh area recently? I saw one that looked just like yours on there.
