Need YJ Brake Upgrade

The rear brakes on my often neglected '87 Wrangler are frozen from rust and it is time to replace some parts - it has a Dana 35 axle with lockrite locker. I have thought about the aftermarket disc brake conversion kits - any thoughts on these? What about swapping axles or disc brakes from another vehicle? Probably more than I want to get into but interested in any suggestions.

I'm not sure if you can do this on your early YJ, but I bought the 1995 booster and MC for my '92. The '95 uses a dual diaphragm booster, and adds a lot more stopping ability. I also upgraded to braided hoses. Some people have said these are a waste of money, but mine gave me a noticeable increase in stopping uniformly (doesn't pull to one side).

You should consider upgrading to a 8.8 Ford Axle. They come out of the Ford Explorers with the disk breaks on them and they are supose to be a pretty easy upgrade. I will be doing it in the Spring.

Only thing growing faster than weeds in the junk yards is Ford Explorers. My local salvage yard has 10 of them and they will practicly give the axles away.

What was the first year for disc brakes on the 8.8 out of the Explorer?

I believe the first year was 96 but it mayhave been 95. Its not hard to find info on this swap at all. Just do a quick google search.

Thanks for the swap suggestions, but I lack the time, space, and skill for that project. I read a few threads about swaps that may be more my speed like the Dana 44 YJ axle from a Canadian YJ - but where would I find that rare beast? I also found some used disc brake conversion kits on ebay for $175 - seems like a good deal considering the new ones are like $600. Any thoughts?
