94 4.0 Neutral vibrates, 1st and 2nd gear are clunky
Hey guys,
I have a 94 4.0 and today I was driving the jeep to the store when stopped at a red light in Neutral, I noticed a light vibration in the shifter and vibration noise from the motor.
If I put the clutch in (in neutral), the vibration stopped. If I let the clutch out the vibration came back.
As soon as the light turned green I noticed getting it into 1st was a little clunky. Moving into 2nd was even clunkier, resisting and wanting to grind.
Moving into 3rd seemed fine.
This is when i decided to turn around and come home.
Shifting down from 3rd to 2nd was impossible. Clutch all the way in and it does not want to go into 2nd. Just grinds and resists.
I limped home with very little stop and go traffic thankfully. But 1st and 2nd gear are almost impossible now. At least im able to go from a dead stop into 1st gear and then into third. Second gear seems like a lost cause. But neutral to 1st is clunky and even shifting out of 1st is clunky.
Does anyone know what would most likely be causing this? Is my clutch on the way out? The motor?
Thanks for the reply, when it's done monsooning I'll have a look under the hood (that is where i check right? the master cylinders reservoir attached to the firewall?)
There was a break in the rain and i got to check the master cylinder - It's not empty, its like half full? I couldn't see a fill or max line on it so i dont know how much is supposed to be in there.
But even just backing it out and moving it forward a little was such a chore.
Something sounds and feels really wrong.
Moving over from neutral to 1st gear feels really clunky, like there's an extra knotch or something. Nothing smooth about it anymore. And just the whole gearbox in general feels clunky all of a sudden.
It's clunky getting into gear and clunky getting out of gear.
Really appreciate any more* advise you YJ wizards might have.
EDIT: Also the vibrating in neutral seems to have gotten a little louder. I got a video of it , not sure how well it captured the sound but I can upload it shortly
I'm not sure I'd say it 'easily' goes into the gears anymore. But you're probably right that it's not the clutch. I've had clutches go on other vehicles before and always noticed early stages of slipping. Nothing like that here.
I noticed in reversing there is an almost louder vibration than the one i notice in Neutral with the clutch out.
And the gearbox was clunky getting it out of reverse, and clunky moving it into first.
I have a feeling you're also right it needs to go onto an operating table. :\
ha I wish i could but I don't even have the tools to take off the hard top at the moment. I also lack some serious competence on such a task. I can just see it now in the Tico Times "Canadian crushed under his own transmission"

ahaha thanks! But i think thats more australian, us canadians say it more like Eh
My guys says $180 to come to my house to drop the tranny and later reinstall it. Seems reasonable I guess? He'd send it off to a tranny expert from there to see whats wrong
Mecanico just got back to me - tranny is apart and it needs new bearing(s) and 4x block rings he calls them? Syncronizadores in spanish. Hard to get the exact parts names cuz spanish
All in; with the tranny removal, disassembly & inspection, parts, rebuild and reinstall - I'm looking at $610... Not sure exactly how much of that is parts yet.
Kinda sucks.
They have everything in stock and it can be ready by tomorrow so, I guess there's that. I'm a little surprised they have parts in stock for a 94 jeep, though...
When removing the tranny my mecanico told me my clutch has less than 40% and recommends me thinking about a new clutch while the tranny is out. Would anyone ever consider that? I guess it depends just 'how much' or 'how long' the clutch really has left.
Ahh haha. I guess I'm getting a performance part for the jeep then. In a desperate attempt to get it here on time I ordered it today with overnight shipping hoping it will land and clear customs and get installed before the 6th. Funny thing it probly isnt gonna happen tho ><
About to get my tranny back and new clutch installed and mechanic says he needs to take the steering wheel off and check to see its not damaged or scratched?
EDIT: I think he said he needs to take it somewhere
haha
that makes sense. He just said volante which i've always known as steering wheel. Now I hope they do mill it flat and not just inspect it.
Anyway thanks again for the info
I'll update this when its all back together
