New Jeep owner with a question

So I just purchased a 1991 Wrangler 2.5L stick. Haven't been able to drive it yet because I'm waiting for my plates. While its just sitting around, I figured now would be a good time to do so work to it. My first issue to tackle is the doors. The jeep has a hard top and full metal doors that don't work. The drives door cannot be locked and can only be open from the inside by pulling a wire that dangles up by the window. The passenger side door only stays closed by locking the door and can only be opened from the outside. In the spring I want to get a bikini top and ride around with halve doors. I am considering getting the half doors with skins now and trashing the metal doors. I think the metal doors may be to far gone. I'm looking for suggestions on what to do for doors. Thanks for the help. Dan

None of the doors on the market are compatible with a hard top, meaning that they wont seal around the top. You can get half doors and put TJ soft upper tops on them (fabrication required) to get them to mate with your hard top.

Or you can get tube doors for the summer. Depends on what state you live in and what the inspection laws say. I live in Pa., and "NO" doors is illegal. So, I have tube doors for mine in the summer. Most cops don't enforce the doors law, or don't know the law. But it is still a law in Pa, and I would rather not give them a reason to pull me over and find other things that they can write a fine for.

These are my tube doors, made them myself. Custom design.

And the inspection law actually says, if it came from the factory with doors on it, then doors are required for it to be legally run on the highway.

None of the YJ series came from the factory without a top and doors. You have to go back as far as the mid-70's to get a Jeep that had a top and doors as an option. Meaning it could be purchased without any.

forlife, love the doors. I might have to try my hand at a set this spring.

OP, the first thing I would do is take off the inside door panel & inspect your linkage. Like HD said, they can be fixed. They might have just fell off, or are so dirty they won't work. My full doors were very hard to open & the door locks wouldn't work at all. I took the door panel off to have a look & found them to be covered in old grease that had gummed the mechanisms up over the years. A little cleaning & some fresh oil & they're good as new.

Great information guys. here are a couple of pictures of the jeep and the doors.

Unfortunately the seller just painted it and put on the diamond plating to cover up the rust.

the drivers side door, all the linkages are detached and broken.

The metal tab for the outside handle to catch on is gone.

I'm not sure what is wrong with the passenger door yet.

Here is the rest of the inside.

What do should I use to reattach the shifter cover?

I ordered all of my inner door parts from the dealership. Still available and not too expensive.
