New thermostat engine temp. is erratic sometimes.

Hey guys ,recently replaced my radiator, also installed new thermostat .The other day it was like 11 degrees F ,after about 10 minutes of running, temp went up to 235/240 ish ,I immediately pulled over and killed the engine .Temp dropped rapidly (down to like 140 ish).Started it back up and after 10 minutes it did it again .Also losing heat from vents when temp spikes over 210 ,if temp stays between 190 and 210 heat is steady and decent .Same day on the way home temp spiked again .......any ideas would be great .

Dave

You mean jack it up a few inches and let it sit for a little bit ? Radiator cap off ?

I have noticed recently that I have the same problem, replaced the thermostat and still continued. Found that I have a problem with the gauge, when it pegs if I tap the face of the temp gauge it comes right back down to normal.
