Newb jeep owner. Bought cheap cause it wouldnt run.

hello all, I became a jeep owner last night after running across one that the owner was tired of trying to get to run. All I did was check the compression, handed him some cash and loaded it on my trailer. I have read a lot here today and I know about where I will start tomorrow but I do have a question.

looking at the firewall on the drivers side, up close to the e brake, there is a grommet with one black and white wire coming thru, what did this wire go to? I didn't take a pic but I was hoping someone knows what im talking about. that wire had been cut and know there is a fuel pump ground that should be in there somewhere.

Here is a pic of my new to me jeep.

What year and motor do you have? It sure helps because there are differences between certain years and if it is a 4.0, 4.2, 2.5 or some transplant.

Great unless someone did some creative wiring your fuel pump wires run in a harness inside the tub on the drivers side to the left rear corner of the fuel tank where there is a plug

The ground wire for the fuel pump might ground there by the parking brake assembly, but it doesn't go through the firewall in a rubber grommet. It runs in the harness that goes back along the inside of the body and down through the driver's side rear corner. I don't have any rubber grommet on that side of my firewall (87 YJ) So, I would say its something that a PO installed for driving lights or possibly an alarm system.

What's so funny about that beer belly?

<-- that YJ has an alarm system in it...A passive system, that once activated turns on front rear and interior cameras that record, as well as once you sit in the seat, a pressure switch that turns on a 119 decibel siren that hopefully explodes your ear drums if you are messin' with my ride.

not sure how to change the thread title but IT LIVES!! first I checked to see if I was getting voltage to the crank sensor and I was, then I noticed the battery cables looked lik,e hell so I went ahead and built new ones, ran new to the fuse block and when I turned the key, I got the check engine light and she fired right up. it ran decent for something that hasn't ran in 2 years. I will have lots of questions when I start to clean things up because there are all sorts of things that are not plugged in. the issue I will be chasing next is a bog as you get over a certain rpm. I gotta check the timing first because as I was about done for the day, I noticed the dizzy was pretty loose. done for the day tho with one big question....there is a part mounted under the hood on the drivers side inner fender that looks like an aluminum heat sink. it has 2 clusters of wires coming out of it, what is this box? mines is not connected to anything.

^^I agree. Probably the best option is to drop, drain, and maybe even flush the tank. And you'll probably need a new fuel filter.

Not sure of the size however, it should be a left handed thread. NAPA should have one.

Injectors could be plugged up, a bad ground could cause a coil issue, and a plugged exhaust could cause our issue....

after 1 month of hard work, I finally got this thing on the road again. I did a lot of work to get this old girl going again and the hardest thing I had to deal with was a really screwed up electrical problem. It was all jacked up, turn on a blinker and the fuel pump might run, turn on the other blinker and the headlights might blink. For anyone chasing an electrical problem, for sure check all your bulbs. My problem was that someone had installed a 1156 bulb in one of the front blinkers and the single contact was touching both sides in the connector. took me 3 days to figure it out but I finally found it.
As for my skipping/bogging, it seems to be going away on its own. maybe the problem was cruddy injectors. When I first started trying to drive it, it would lean out and almost die right around 2k rpm. after cleaning and checking everything I could do on my budget, now it wont do that until it hits 3500. when it does skip, I can let off and stab it again and it clears up. my next post will be some start to finish pics.

Looking good hotshot, keep it up with the great work you have been doing. But realize its never completed. There is always some kind of mod that you want or see on someone else's ride. Its a disease!

im not crazy about white either but I didn't have the energy to change colors. the more black I add to it the better it looks. everything that is black is painted with a heavy texture bedliner. well not the top. the top came out awesome painted with duplicolor vinyl paint.

hey guys, well I finally got everything right and kicked it on down the road. sold it yesterday and bought a 94 with a 4.o today. I totally fixed the lean skip by swapping to the 19lb ford injectors. I remedied a lot of my drive/ride issues by removing 2 long leafs out of each pack.
The new jeep was sold at discount because of a bad tranny that wont go into first. I was able to get it in after I got it home and removed the boot. I thing the boot is in the way because of a bad tranny mount. Its needs painting and a little lift because it has 31's. I will post pics tomorrow with my questions.
