Newbie to YJ's AX5 Help

Just purchased a 91 4cyl YJ needs trans fixed. I was wondering if there's any substitutes for the ax5 to a 4 banger? I am an automatic fan but know I need to keep the 5 spd with a 4 cly. I have plenty of 4x4 experience from full 2wd conversion to 4x4, XJ experience and 4 and 5 link fabrication experience. Any info regarding a 5 spd transplant or up grade with minimal alteration would help!

Many people have swapped the ax5 for an ax15 using a dodge Dakota's bellhousing. It is still a manual, but is stronger.

Also the TF 904 was used in 2.5l YJs in 94 and 95. You might look into that...

Can I use the Durango box too? Does the motor size or cyl/liter displacement matter on the Durango box? Should I just rebuild it? Do I need to step up or will the AX5 be ok? Sorry for all the 3rd degree, but I'm Picking up the YJ tomm. so I'd like to get as much info. as poss. I heard the input shaft on the 231 was diff? I have a spare XJ automatic 231 sitting in the garage so I can swap it if needed.

If you are sticking with the 2.5, the ax5 will be fine. I don't know about autos, but for the ax15, you use the bellhousing off a 2.5l durango. Because the ax15 is longer than the ax5, you may need a longer front driveshaft.

I don't know much more than that about it since I am planning to change to a benz diesel engine and swap to the ax15 at the same time.

Good luck with the Diesel swap. I plan on doing a 4bt or 6bt on my 70 Scout when I find a decently priced one. The mechanic where I work said to me once "why is everything you drive on steroids" so I think I'll keep this one stock!
Any idea cost on rebuilding the 5 or should I get a bone yard one or find one here!

As far as rebuilding the AX5, here is what I have found for it:
Transmission Master Rebuild Kit w/ Gaskets & Seals AX5L-MASKIT

Before I bought the YJ, I was considering getting a Scout II and putting a 4BT in it... but the YJ with a TDI or OM617.95 was the other option. I decided on the OM. I just happened to find a good YJ before I found a good Scout II.

Mine is the Scout 80. It's what Ford modeled their early Bronco after. It's a little smaller than the Broncos but not by much. That's why I think I'll be ok with a 4bt and a 727 auto with a Dana 300. It already has 44's but I may need a rear 60. I want to set it up for a little fifth wheel travel trailer about 20' since it's a 1/2 cab. How? I am selling everything and clearing the garage. A quadzilla, 2 oddysy's, my motorhome ect..
