Hello all! Newbie here, looking for help already. I have a 95 YJ, and the rear end locked up on me a couple of weeks ago. I have Obi-Wan's article on replacing the stock D35 with a Explorer 8.8 axel, but I wonder if there are other Jeep models/years that can also be used? Used Wrangler parts aren't all that easy to find around here (at least I haven't had much luck), but Cherokees are all the time being parted out. Thanks to anyone who has any guidance! I MISS DRIVING MY JEEP!!!
89 xj some of them had a dana 44 in the rear and with a little nudging those will work but make sure you get the dana 44. you have the chance to upgrade might as well
a jeep xj is set up for a spring over application, where the yj is spring under. the ford 8.8 will probably be less modification and there is also after market parts specifically for installing a ford 8.8 into a yj. i'll see if i can find them and post them here
I have a 95 yj I put a 4" rough country lift and 33'' tires on I know I have a dana 30 and a dana 35 rear w/ 4:10 gr but now my speedomiter is off. I need to know with out changing axels what is the highest gr can I go? I was wanting to go to 4:88? would it be better to change my axels insted and go to a 4:88or can i stay stock? what would you suguest? I'm newto drivetrains and gears but I'm thankfull for any help I can get again thanks

4.10 gears are generally what you want with 33 tires if you have a 4.0. if you have the 2.5, then i think 4.88 is generally what you might want, and that is also the biggest you can go in the d30/d35 combo.
now to address the issue of your speedo being off, you need a new speedo gear to correct that.
I've got 2.5 but am going to change over when funds are avaliable to 4.0 when i was running 30'' tires speed was dead on it was when i went to 33s that my speed went off I thought by re gearing it would come back to normal? also if 4:88 is the highest, would it be better to change axels to a larger axel? and thanks for the welcome please dont think me dumb but im a refrigeration mech. and I'm trying to build my dream and hobby for me and my little boy to off road together thanks
ask as many questions as you need. every one on here is here to help.
if you are gona do a motor swap, may as well go to a v8. swapping in a 4.0 is gona be about the same as if you were to swap over to a v8. as far as cost and everything goes
re-gearing the axle is going to give you back some of the power you lost when you went up to a bigger tire.
putting the appropriate speedo gear in will correct the reading on your speedo.
as far as beefier axles go, its all up to you. the axle combo on there will handle the 33s as long as you dont thrash the jeep around and go hard on the skinny pedal. and if the 4.88 gears that the 2.5 would be happy with will fit, then id just stick with the stock axles, might save you a little cash. now if you do decided to swap in more powerful motor, then what gearing you would need changes, and what axles you need change based on what engine you decide on.
Thanks for all your help i am greatfull and one more Q? is regearing realy hard or is it something i can do myself i was informed it was better to pay someone.
i would highly suggest you have a good shop perform the re-gear. try and look for one that has done them before. i am pretty comfortable working on my own vehicles and i do everything i can, but R and P gears are the only thing i dont feel comfortable doing as far as working on cars goes
the forum is here to help you. feel free to ask anything. there are a lot of very knowledgeable members who will help with any problems or questions you have.
well just my two cents but instead of regearing the dana 35 my not upgrade to the 44 and find one with taller gear ratio.the cost for a re gear is expensive and i dont recommend you doing it by your self.at least not the first time once you see it done and once you have the tools and what not its not to bad. but the pinion depth is a pita to get right
ok schnutzy if it was your jeep what would you do? and what is the most commen ford to get that out of and are they durable and what is the factory gear rat in the 8.8.
id run a ford 8.8 cause its a good budget option for the yj, its very tough, and very common. best place to pull one os from a 95 to 2000 ford explore, that way you also get disk brakes and such. i think the factory gears for the ford explore were 3.07, 3.55, and 4.10. thats a big i think there though. either way, with those 33s and 4.10s i wouls sugest a re gear anyways.
the 4.88 is the highest you can go with a d30 as your front axle. anything bigger will not fit. the front and rear gears have to match for everything to work properly. so no matter what axles you have, the gears have to match. so if you put a ford 8.8 or d44 out back, and you have 4.88 gears in the d30 up front, you will need to put 4.88 gear in the rear axle you chose
so if i chose to go with a 8.8 or a d44 and higher than a 4:88 in the rear then i need a d:44 in the front or the front part of the axel from the explorer?
yes, re gearing is very expensive. but it is also very worth it. 33s on stock gearing with the 2.5 is a bit of a dog to drive, upping to proper gears will make it more drive able, and keep you from luggin the engine and such
tranny will be fine. t-case will need the new speedo gear. and depending on how much lift you are running, you will want to consider a SYE and new rear driveshaft. may not need to worry about it at first, but it should be done eventually
