Just bought a 90 YJ 4.2 carb manual with 122xxx miles only had it a week drove it back home from where I bought it 4 hrs drove fine 2 days ago it was very cold let it warm up for 20 mins drive 1/2 mile and motor died won't even try to crank when I turn the key ! Can someone lead me in the right direction what to check I'm a new Jeep owner and know nothing bout them also here are know issues I'm having other than the no start no crank sometimes the wipers, turn signals and blower motor doest work , heater fan stays the same speed even if I turn it on low doest change speed ,the heater doest work that found and ignition switch is very hard to turn and turn signal switch doest "snap " when you engage up or down and help would greatly be appreciated !
The turn signal mechanism is probably broken. Pieces of it may be interfering with the ignition switch. If the switch is not working properly that would also explain why the other accessories sometimes work and sometimes don't.
You can easily verify that the motor is not seized by turning the nut on the harmonic balancer, or by putting it in gear and pushing the Jeep slightly to turn the engine. Just be sure to disconnect the battery first and have the ignition off. You don't want to be chasing the Jeep in the event it starts or be run over.
Check for battery voltage at big wire on starter if good check for battery voltage on small wire while trying to crank it over. If good need starter if not first check ALL fuses and relays. If that all checks ok let us know.
Can you push start it? Bigdaddyof4 was right when he said to check for 12v on starter (use multimeter to make sure it's at least close to 12v, a test probe will light up with way less than that). That will eliminate the starter as a culprit.
Thanks for all the help I'll check it out tomorrow!
