No Seal Around the Hardtop

When I bought my Jeep, the PO put a hardtop on, and had it fastened straight into the body with no seal around it. B/c of this, the top is sitting directly on the body, which makes it difficult to open the tail gate a lift gate. You have to open and close them together and make sure you work them in together as you close them so they will acutally close. What all do I need as far as seals go to fix this.

The Jeep is a 1990 YJ, but I'm not sure what kind of top it is. I do know it's not a stock hardtop.

I could be wrong but I don't think it's cause you have it straight to the body with out seals because that's how mine is I have no seals under the top at all and I have no issues. It might need some kind off adjustment maybe

you need to undo the bolt holding the back window on and lift the window up. i put some thing gaskets around the body because i would get some water dribbling in at the car wash and under the front when it rained hard and i was on the highway.

The guy I bought it from said he called a local Jeep 4x4 place and they told him it was bc the top is sitting so low on the body bc of no seal. They told him to put a seal on it and it would lift it up enough for the tailgate and lift gate to open right.

Anyways, thanks for the responses.

The Stock ones didn't come with any kind of seal except at the windshield. As someone said above, if you loosen the hinge bolts that go directly through the window (not into the top) you should be able to slide the window up a bit and it might make all the difference.

Easy way to check, when the liftgate is closed, look at the body line on the hard top (its about 6 inches above the tub on the back) it should be in-line with the piece that holds the bottom of the glass so its one even line.. If its not even then adjust the window as suggested..

The black oval shows where to look:

Dark, It looks like you went the Plexiglas route too and didn't install the rubber piece between the plexiglas and the outside fiberglas piece. Your has the same tilt outward mine does.

No seal on hard top

Just bought a hard top for 2004 Wrangler sport. Do I need a seal or not??? What about the wiring for the rear window defrost and wiper...unsure of how to do that?
Thanks for any input
