No start

Hey guys and girls, just registered here. My dad owns a blue 1989 jeep wrangler Yj, with the inline 6 in it. It has been having some problems starting lately. It started with the occasional long crank, then turned into the peddle patter. Yesterday morning, I got a call from him at 6:00am telling me to come get him, the jeep stranded him. We have checked the plugs, no spark to them. We replaced the coil, and the pickup inside of the distributor, and still nothing. I pulled the wire out of the top of the coil and had him turn it over, and their is no spark jumping out of the coil. What else could it be?

lots of possibilites, you need to find out if you have fuel pressure and injector pulse along with the no spark. common problems are crank position sensor, also could be the distributor.

Fuel pressure is fine. It doesn't have a crank position sensor either. We looked for one today. I think we got a bad coil and put on it, because we did some more testing this afternoon, and we're getting fire all of the way to the coil, but that's where it stops. Dad got so mad that he held the coil wire and let me turn it, and it didn't get him. So, we're getting yet another new coil tomorrow to put on it, then we'll go from there.

If you have an 89 with a 6 and carb there is an Ignition Control Module under the hood, under the coolant expansion tank held on with 3 10mm bolts with a plug adapter. These go bad and your jeep will either not run properly or not run at all. Most auto parts stores stock them and they are easy to replace. This most lilely is the problem. If this unit is bad you may get some spark to the coil, but not enough to run the engine.

Hope I'm not too late with this info, but you really should try to find a genuine Duraspark box at the junkyard. These are much cheaper, & much better than the crappy Chinese box you will find at the big box parts store.
