Not getting fire

I went out to crank the ol jeep yesterday and it wouldnt crank. Raw gas smell from the exhaust. No fire. I pull the ignition fuse put it back in then it cranks for 2 mins the dies. Now will only run for like 10 sec before it dies. I'm guessing it's the crank sensor but would like a second opinion before I buy parts. What yall think?

When you say it wouldn't crank does that mean the starter won't engage and turn the engine? Or the starter engages, turns the engine but the engine won't fire up and start?

If it's the second scenario, mine did that once. I ran the battery down trying to start it, had raw gas fumes coming from the exhaust. It turned out to be the ignition module. On my 87 YJ it is on the fender well under the windshield washer resevior.

What engine? Mine is 4.2, if you have the same it might be the ignition module. Quadratec sold them when I last saw a cataloge but that was years ago. I'm sure the dealer has them too. There's a post on another thread where someone got a used one off ebay. I don't know if I would go that route but that's me.

If it's a 2.5, then your Crankshaft Position Sensor is bad.

It was the BRAND NEW ignition coil. Called and got a free replacement and that one lasted a grand total of 3 days. So I'm back to the stock IC. And opinions on a GOOD performance one?

I had the exact problem with my 90' yj about six months ago. After replacing nearly everything in the ignition system except the distributor I had a mechanic friend look at it. Turned out to be the pick up coil in the distributor. It was cheaper and easier for me to just replace the entire distributor. To replace the pick up coil in the distributor alone requires a puller that ran about sixty bucks.

When i was having my problem, I could get it to start but it would die in a short time then it finally wouldn't start at allow and I could smell gas in the exhaust as it cranked. If this is the same thing you're having be sure to check your oil and see if it smells like gas. Mine did and it was do to unburnt fuel (because I wasn't getting spark) getting into the oil. You will need to change the oil since the gas breaks the lubricating properties down in the oil.

Hope this helps
