So I've had it with my NP231... Looking to go chainless. I have a 93 with the stock 4.0L and AX-15 tranny. I'm sure someone out there has done a 205 swap but I can't seem to find any info on it. Does anyone have the details on what it would take to do the swap?

I have a 205 in my YJ but it came attached to the NP435 I installed. I think you would be better off with a Dana 300 over the 205 because of the gearing. The 205 works great with the granny gear in the 435. I think it would not be a great combo with a AX-15. The 300's have a gear ratio similar to the 231, and you can get lower gears and also switch the out put from passanger to driver side like the 231.

1) "So" is an incredibly ignorant way to start a sentence Darrell.

2) 205 behind an AX-15 is a horrible idea. 1.96:1 ratio is not low enough for you, with the non-granny 1st gear.

3) You would need to take a Ford 205 (Dodge/GM are passenger drop) and put a 23 spline Dodge input in it (your tranny has a 23 spline output, ford/chevy dont have a 23 spline input) and use the Dodge coupler as well (Dodge 205's use a male input, with a coupler to join the tranny output/tcase input).

4) What happened with your rebuild that you were doing this weekend? 231's are a good case, don't give up on it.

so... (Ha) for everyone else... I ended up deciding to rebuild the 231. The 205 is simply too damn heavy married to the ax-15 IMO, and seemed like too much of a pain to make work. The rebuild went great and she's back at it!
