Oh no! Blown engine?

While idling at an intersection, my 92 YJ started to idle lowly and started burning oil right out of the blue. There is now plenty of splattered oil all over the engine and it seems like oil is coming through the dipstick if that's possible. It has leaked a good amount in the driveway. There is oil on exhaust pipes. Seems to run ok on the road though. While driving, you can see and smell oil smoke. While idling, it is missfirng. The engine has never leaked oil before and has 132,000 on it. Mechanic says it's not rear seal. And thoughts?

Blown head gasket maybe....im no mechanic but that's where i would start...and definatley not drive it..you don't wanna make it worse...any "different" sounds?knocking noise? weird ticking?overheating?what is your oil pressure?i had an s-10 years ago that sounded alot like your describing...difference being my crank snapped..lol needless to say its rpms dropped and never came back.

Is the oil being burned off the engine and exhaust, or is it being burned internally and blue smoke coming from the tail pipe? did the mechanic say anything else?

oil pressure sender grenade? oil press. guage responding? If leaking that bad should be able to pop hood , run it, and see whre it is spitting from.

Sounds like a broken piston. The oil coming out of the dipstick indicates compression getting into the crankcase, and pushing out. The four cyl engines had a service bulletin years ago about a piston/rod problem, and jeep would include 4 piston and rod assembly's, along with all the gaskets and bearings in the kit. My 91 had a slight knock, and it was #4 piston coming apart.

No knocking noise. No overheating. Oil pressure is normal.

Yeah it's being burned off the engine and exhaust. Not being burned internally, not blue. The mechanic said it could be serious, but possibly not.

No knocking. Miss-firing, but runs good!

broken piston ring maybe? Or could be just a blown head gasket. Hard to say.

remove the oil fill cap, if you are getting alot of blow by it a internal problem. if not, degrease the motor and try to find the leak.

How much of an rpm drop are we talking and how bad is it misfiring? I would suspect the misfire coming from either something breaking and messing up timing or an oil soaked spark plug. Pull each plug and check to see if any have oil on them. If one does, that cylinder is your problem. That said, these engines are notorious for blow by issues after a while. Mine was coming out of every hole it could find (including the dip stick tube). Check the air filter box for oil splatter, that should verify blowby. ( my box literally filled up work oil on a long trip once)

rebel-what did you do with so much blow by? New engine? My mechanic didn't even bother to look. New motor. $1800 for a new motor and there you go. $3,000.00. I bought this '92 for $3500.00 and have easily put 10,000 in it. I got 132,000 miles out of this motor and babied it. VERY disappointed with this Jeep YJ.

x2 on checking the air filter for oil. Could be as simple as a clogged PCV valve.

Check your PCV valve, if its become plugged, your engine will find TONS of ways to vent that pressure caused by natural blowby....

your 4.0 has 138k on it.... the thing just broke in... your mechanic is trying to bend you over.

there are many reasons for oil burning and coming out of the dip stick tube... first and foremost is the PCV... its pretty common. if a piston came loose you would know it.. and the jeep would not be running ok... it would be running HORRIBLY.

either take it to another place for a second opinion or buy a CLYMER manual and a pcv valve and some breather hose and replace it... for 50 bucks and an hour or so of your time you can either be 50 bucks behind ... or 50 bucks ahead and have a nice running rig again.

but even if that doesnt fix your problem it sounds like a stretch that you would need a "entire engine"... i just replaced a head on a 4.0 with 302k at work.... it runs like a champ and has plenty of life left... there are many answers to whatever equation you have... its just making sure you fix the right thing.

Yeah banging. the engine was running just fine through all this even though one cylinder might have been fouled. I have a feeling it could have been an easy fix (ONCE THE ENGINE IS DROPPED) but I think the mechanic is too lazy and he thinks I have money which I DON'T. I had to borrow 3 large to get it fixed. Someone said it's not worth it to buy one of these things unless you can dick around with it yourself.
