Question oil gauge reads lbs when engine is not running

my 89 4.2 oil gauge reads 40 lbs when the engine is off or running. when I pull the wire from the send unit the gauge pegs to the high side. Want to be sure the send unit is bad before buying as it costs $37. appreciate any help. I am new to this Jeep thing but I am getting hooked fast. Happy wheeling!!!

Listen to Fweaky that's your fix. You're going to have to spend a few $. These sending units aren't that accurate anyway. It's really only an indicator. No two register the same.
