oil pressure funky

alright so today I was driving and I noticed that my oil pressure was funky. It was only running at about halfway to 40. it usually runs at 40 and then goes up alittle as I drive. Duh. But today I was going to get gas and noticed it like that, then when I started it back up to leave the gas station, it was reading zero. THEN igot home and took a look and it went normal again. I just replaced the sending unit 'cause it was spewing oil. could it be the gauge or do you think my oil pan is shot? I am due for an oil change though too.

I think it might be a funky gauge. Mine has been on zero for years now when it's warmed up and at an idle. It's at 40 when I first start.

When your pressure looks like it drops keep a real close eye on your temp. If your temp goes up when your oil pressure drops, somethings wrong internally. If your temp does not rise when the oil pressure drops then it is just a guage, sender or wires...

Sounds a little funky! Thes yjs are notorious for having misleading and just plain haywire oil gauges.

I drove it around all day on different readings. And all day I was watching the temp. like a hawk but it never went too high. So I'm not quite sure. I've got a gauge I can manually test the oil temp with but I just didn't have time today. Didn't blow my motor yet! Thanks guys.

if your temp is ok, its got to be a bad connection or something... When an engine looses all oil pressure it only takes about 30 seconds to a minute to skyrocket the temp until it siezes up. I wonder if they make a manual oil pressure guage for these that we could use in the dash hole from the original? It would be nice to emliminate the wires and sensors and simply go with a pressure based dead on guage.

I have always been told those engines dont need much oil pressure, my guage is diff alot of the time but running strong for 20 years now.
