only starts when fuel is poured down carb

HI guys how are you doing? I have a 1990 jeep wrangler and im having truble getting it started. I cant find the fuel pump relay on mine it says that it should be in the fusebox under the hood but my year doesnt have the fuse box under the hood. When i go to start it it will just crank but wont start and the only way i can get it to kind of start is if i pour gas down the carb? Im thinking this could be the fuel pump or fuel pump relay but Idont no were the fuel pump relay is? Thanks for any help I have been looking for it forever

well to begin helpinging you what year is it? when you turn the key to accessory do you hear the fuel pump prime(cycle).? if you do hear the pump cycle then it's not a relay problem. when did this problem start? did you do a motor swap or did it just not decide to start one day? these are all things to include into your post to get the most help. good luck and keep us posted. feel free to send me a pm, i'm more then willing to help.

The replacement ignition switch. Make sure all wires were hooked up properly.

That is true. I keep forgetting about the 4.2l. I keep thinking they either came with the 2.5l hamster or the 4.0l. Since I canned my hamster for the 4.0l.

X2, I was wondering if anyone else had noticed it said carb and 1990

These pumps aren't real expensive either, but it does seem like it might be the ignition switch since that's when it started.

If the switch looks OK, you could disconnect the fuel line & coil wire.
Then put the fuel line in a large glass jar & give it a few cranks. if the jar starts filling up, the pump is prolly working.

Have a fire extinguisher on hand for this!

the center wire on the distributor trace it back and that's ur coil and yeah my 90 has the mechanical pump and its real easy to replace also check and make sure you dont have throtle body injection because the injectors could not be getting signals to fire the wat t do that in look down what looks like the carb and see if their is two round pieces suspended above the butterfly if their is check ur injectors but first take the fuel line off and see if when u crank the motor over u get gas out of it then u will now if its the pump or not

Yes it is the center wire on the distributor cap. You want to disconnect that wire from the coil to prevent any sparks from igniting the raw fuel while you have the fuel line open during the glass jar test.

disconnect wires from dist.

remove fuel line from carb

attach FP gauge(20 at HF) to end of fuel line.

get buddy w/fire ext.

crank engine 5-10 seconds.

compared registered reading to the shop manual you have on your bench-you have one-right?

if FP is fine, your POS carter stepper motor carb is destined for either a non-smog state or rockauto.com for $285 and a new carb.

worked for me. 90 wrangler 4.2 carb.

I may as well be the one to mention it.

If you live in an emissions exempt state, or you can get an exempt sticker, or you know your inspector really well then you should look into the MC2100 swap.

This is a junkyard carb that you rebuild yourself, (easy to do) & adapt to your intake manifold. Mr. Gasket #1937 is the adapter. You'll need to do this first;

I have the same problem with the same jeep. The relay is next to the battery on mine. If I prime it it starts and I can drive it. Someone told me it might be the computer

Unless it has a glass fuel filter that you can see fuel flowing through, I'd replace the fuel filter. Then pull the coil wire and see what the flow is like.
