overcharging help!

Ok I'm having lots of problem with my yj recently. Came back off holiday and the alternator was seized.I tried starting and engine struggled but started with a squeal. I got a second hand one alternator and the gauge shows 10 volts and check engine light is on. I put a multimeter to the back and to the battery and it reads 17 volts. It has a fairly new battery on . Is it the alternator? Are there any I can do? It's on my 1995 yj by the way.
Update.
Got another second hand one. Now it's charging at 20v but the engine check light is out. Is it still the Ecu? Any way I can check?

I've checked fault codes and all I get is 12 which I believe is because the battery has been disconnected within 50 key turns and 33 which is ac clutch which it doesn't have.
Any more help would be appreciated.

I would replace the alternator, it seems that one is bad. Unless you have an external regulator, that may require some verification.

You can run for a while without an alternator, so if you can limp it home that is a possibility.

I went about 120 miles without an alternator once, and still had enough juice to start it again. Just leave all the accessories that you can off.
