patch a hole in the gas tank

morning all!

so, over the weekend i replaced the clutch (man that was fun) and when putting the exhaust back on, i didn't relocate the flex hose far enough away from the fuel tank......and well, the title explains what happened next.

so, i would like to patch this instead of buying new and here is my thought process. please let me know your thoughts on this:

1. gently sand affected ares.
2. steel tape over the holes.
3. jb weld over the steel tape to ensure closure.
4. fiberglass over the jb weld as an extra step of caution. ( may not be really necessary).
5. remove flex hose and install standard downturn pipe to deflect exhaust down instead of out.

suggestions?

thanks.

I wouldn't but it's your rig. For $300 a new tank can be had or look for a used one. Not a fan of patches on gas tanks.

I had a 69 Cougar that I picked up a broom stick in the gas tank (going down the road) I made it home with the last of the gas running out. I got a tube of liquid steel, squirted it on a piece if cardboard, took the broomstick and held the cardboard up against the hole and let it dry overnight for a temp fix. It was still like that 2 years later when I traded it in. I still think I just got lucky.

I used this stuff Plastex Plastic Repair Kits and it is holding up now for about 7 months.
I also have used their other plastic repair kit and it worked great.
I found out about them from a WI jeeper and he used their regular repair kit for his motocross fender that was still holding up after a year and a half.
If I could have found a used tank for $50 I would have gotten one but there was nothing around.
Good luck.
