No expert, but faulty sender? faulty gauge?

Can you take a voltage meter and see what readings you get at the gauge? If they jump all over the place then I'd say the sender is crazy

Ha, yours does that too? Mine does it and when my brother and I took it on a 400 mile trip couple of summers ago he asked me how I know how much gas I have, I told him I just split the swing

i have a issue like this as well. i have a feeling its a dirty connection on the sender end. mine reads ok while im sitting still but when im moving it has about a 1/2 tank swing on it and its pretty rapid. start with checking the voltage on it and if that reads wacky check the connection to your sending unit before replacing.

I erase my mile marker and when it reaches 160 miles is time for a fill-up.
