Play in rear axle?

Hey ya'll I had my back wheels off and stuff and i noticed that on the passenger side rear axle shaft I can grab the end end move it left to all directions(towards the front and back of the car) I figure it's from bearings but the other side doesn't do it. My axles are NOT C-clip. bring it's an '89. So it's not in and out play. It finaly occured to me this is the clunnk I been hearing when coming into my driveway. Is this bad, or what? Thanks abunch.
