I changed over my 1988 YJ a few months ago. Look up "258 CID HEI conversion" on the net. I put in a 30,00 volt set up. If you need more help just PM me.

Awsome, thanks GJ.
I saw some things on the net, was just not sure if it could actually be done.
Was it a straight forward swap?

There is also a TFI conversion. The TFI is the system used on the Ford I6. I don't know if it is as good as the HEI conversion, but the option is out there and should be less expensive.

All that is involved is buying a high energy ignition distributor, preferably one already set up with the jeep drive gear on it, pulling out the old distributor and coil, dropping the new unit in, hooking up the switched power source and the tach wire (if you have one), changing the plugs and gapping them to .0045, replacing the standard plug wires with 8mm wires to hold the voltage, retiming your ignition sequence and you are done. Not quite that easy, but you get the picture.
