I am slowly working through my 89 4.2/tf999 (all stock with the Carter) to get it where I feel it should mechanically be. I replaced all the seals in the tcase/trans to stop the bleeding. It also got a new timing chain, harmonic balancer, numerous hoses, and vacuum lines. I am going to start on fine tuning the engine and replacing suspension bushings since the major things are out of the way.
I have a noise that sounds kinda like popcorn popping in a kettle. Listen real close and you can hear it. It's much easier to hear in person. Does anyone know what this is and what I need to do to fix it? I don't know if this is a timing issue or ??? The link below is a recording I took.
A couple of you have really helped me out on some of the last projects and I really appreciate it! The Jeep is almost at a point where I consider it dependable.
Check for an exhaust leak or possible cracked exhaust manifold. You may not see the cracks but that is my best guess. It could also be where the exhaust manifold meets the head or exhaust pipe. May just be a little loose. Mine does that every so often.
Flashlight and a mirror work best. Look for discoloration which is left behind from the exhaust. If it is a 2.5l it could be tough to find so look closely at the bolt and stud attach points. The check all around where the exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold meet. If it is a 4.0 they have exhaust manifold crack problems well documented here. It should be visible.
I found the location of the noise. Can anyone tell me what is going on? I have an inspection coming up in about two weeks and would like to properly eliminate this noise before I go.
It does sound like a rattle due to the phone recording. It sounds like a slurp, like when you get to the bottom of a drink with a straw. There is a suction from the hose I covered. The noise stops when I block the air flow.
I have done a little more reading and found this is part of the pulse air system. Is anyone a pulse air system expert? I don't have a cat converter and pretty sure it shouldn't be making this noise constantly.
check that sprynet web page sorry I don't have the link but he explains the pulse air system and troubleshooting it pretty well.
