popping out of 1st

I have a 95 4 cylinder. I keep popping out of first gear unless I hold the shifter. No other issues and 1st works fine if I hold it. But once I take my hand off of the shifter and accelerate it kicks into neutral.

I could be completely wrong here but wouldnt this most likely be a synchro issue

Yes, plus the AX5 is crappy. Try changing the fluid with Pennzoil's Syncromesh or synthetic 10w30.

Its not bad, just make sure you get a cheap pump that screws on the bottle will make ur life so much easier. they have them at every auto parts store. You wont feel the difference right away with the syncromesh, give it some time, but as far as fluids go it is expensive.

Well I have done all the manual trans cars and trucks I've owned I would say its easy ... I have the nv3550 but the concept is the same.. The drain bolt is on the bottom... It's a large metric Allen head plug on mine I used the head of a metric bolt the right size with some nuts lock tired and tightened together to open it up... Remove drain... Drain oil... Remove fill, replace drain, fill with oil till it comes out the fill hole (a pump makes work easier worth the $) replace plug and good to go. I used mopar fluid for mine...

Sounds easy enough....I'm gonna try that Pennzoil stuff and see if it corrects the problem. Thanks for the replies.

I had that problem with reverse a few years ago. A friend fixed it. I think he popped off the boot and saw that it wasn't lined up correctly after the PO put on a lift. So he had to shave a little out of the floor and it works great now. At least that is what I think he did

Update: 1st gear not working at all now....kicks me right out whether I hold the shifter or not. Should I still try the syncmesh fluid or is it too late? I don't want to waste money on the fluid cause i'm gonna be scraping change together if I need a new tranny.

x2, you may not need a new tranny, may just need new synchros. Its not that hard of a job but if you're inexperienced and drive it daily you may need to take it to a shop.

I can buy a used tranny off a guy with a 90 day warranty for $200....my best friend has everything I need to install at his garage including a lift. Am I going to be able to be able to replace syncros cheaper than that?

So I found an ax5 tranny for $150. The seller says it has about 94k on it. He is also going to warranty it for 90 days. This is looking like the route I'm gonna go. My question to you is: Is my tranny with a bad 1st gear synchro worth anything? My wife will kill me if I have it lying around the house for an extended time. If not then I'll go get my scrap metal money lol.

For $150 that's a good price, but at 94,000 miles that tranny will be in knocking on deaths door pretty soon, especially if the P.O. didn't take care of it and ran over-sized tires. Yes your Ax-5 is worth something, just advertise it with a bad 1st syncro. A lot of guys don't mind rebuilding the tranny if they get a good deal on one.
